Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

Featured Replies

This piece caused such a uproar at its premier from the public becasue of its difference in style. It deserves great recognition. It tells the story of a set of tribal dances which ends in death and was written for a ballet.

thankyou

;)

Stravinsky is awesome. I just got a bunch of Stravinsky's works conducted by the composer himself. I love The Rite.

Yes, many of us are aware of the awesomeness that is The Rite of Spring.

Some regard it as the greatest work of the 20th century.

I certainly love it :).

I totally agree with you that is the greatest work of the 20th century... Too bad that back then only a few recognized it as it really is! The ones that knew it's value were the musicians and the composers... The audience was indeed horror-stricken... The countess de Pourtales felt offended by the piece, saying that is a mockery (lol) but in fact it had the same impact to the world as the 9th symphony of L. van Beethoven! My favorite part is "Dances of the young girls"... it is the most impressive part for me!

Rite of spring was inspiration on many of my works. not only rite, but I love his other works, too. Firebird is certainly another one.

I remember I had times looking at the score of Rite and feeling terribly bad, saying to myself that a work of this magnitude, detail and power is never to be written again, and certainly not by me.

I also have the score of it... And is ENORMOUSLY complex and hard to fallow when listening! :D But is a pleasure to see his "drawings" with notes and notations (glissandos, legatos etc.)... :)

It's second performance was acclaimed - Stravinsky was carried through the streets. You have to remember that the first performance was in a theatre in the Champs Elysees to an audience that wasn't at all appropriate for new music, very un-French ballet, not to mention the headache it gave Nijinsky.

A true masterpiece.
