Hey, thanks for the replies guys. :happy: I'm using a C dorian mode, and I'm starting with the first degree > C minor chord. So you sing the chord that you picked. I picked C minor to start with. You sing all the notes, and you pick which one you want to start with. You could also start with one off of the chord, but you have to start with a chord anyway so it's good to sing the one that you start with. What time in the video are you talking about? Maybe I can help out if I know what part I said what. x_x Well, to master melodic writing I would just think you have to be able to sing intervals. If you're able to sing all intervals and recognize them, then you don't really need to understand complicated theory at all. You just sing it, and if you sing it you can write it. I always go by a rule of thumb in all music: Firstly, all music is simple. Secondly, if you can sing it you can make it.

What do you mean by that? I'm specifically wondering what you mean about each pitch carrying an intervalic relationship with the other pitches around it creating a fundamental structure which is the melody itself. Is that just another way of saying the intervals make up the melody?

I think the purpose was to internalize the sonority created by the dorian mode he was using. I think you can elaborate more on how you're building the melody. Each pitch carries an interval relationship with the pitches around it that creates a fundamental structure within the melody itself. There's a lot more to say about making a melody using your technique. And I use a very similar method I call "mapping". You remove the pitches from the rhythm and -map- your own sonority (like you did) onto the piece following similar linear motion. That's how I was able to make an free-tone rendition of Debussy's Claire De Lune using similar rhythm and linear contour. There are all sorts of ways to create melody, but it takes an understanding of the concepts of melody (rhythm being just one of many variables) to really master melodic writing.

Very cool. Hey, that video was made by you! Awesome! Thus, I can ask you about your technique. Like, what was the point of singing the C minor triad? You never really outlined it in your melody, you focused more on the dorian scale. Did you sing it so that you would keep the chord tones in mind when you sang your melody? Nice work! -John

Okay I wont reply to all of your comments, but just one, perfect example how you misunderstood me. The point was its predictable , not was I write dance music or not. I could have say other kind of music like pop/rock.. OMG

Write such a piece that you can permorf, it dont have to be virtuoso stuff (of course it would be better). But in the accompaniment of course you can use samples or other things. In the sample I provided I'm tapping on the table, I didnt use any drum sample, so as an accompaniment you can use such stuff. But the solo is has to be continuous if you understand, means the accompaniment here is to make a kind of ambient to your playing it cant replace it or stop it. --- And wow! We are now 7. No its not true. I decided the deadline only today so you can join. :) Maybe you think that its late to join because of the deadline, but dudes I cant believe that you cant write a solo piece in two weeks. Its impossible. If you have to write a piece for full orchestra I would give a month or two, but its a solo piece competition. Not that hard. Not late to join to everybody. Of course I can extend the deadline if you want guys, its not a strict deadline I just want to start writing today, since most of people start to write a piece in the last few minutes/days.

Dude, I KNOW how to make variations of a theme, how to make interesting, transposition, variation, there are many techniques. You mentioned a lot of ways. I know them. You didnt understand me. I DO NOT WANT to make a theme interesting when I get bored of it. When I get bored of something I dont want to deal with it. Let us say I start a March like that, than my band we play for example the "Phil Collins Collection", and than I'm not interested in writing a March anymore, now I want to write something popular. I know how to develop a theme, if you dont believe me listen to my Twinkle song. Its a five minute piece based on "Twinkle,twinkle", many variations, transposition, different context/styles. The problem isnt that I cant develop themes, the problem is I dont want to develop and dont want to deal with something that I get bored. so I stop writing it. Thanks for your comment anyway! :D --- EDIT: Most of times I dont develop a theme not just because I get bored of it, most of times I'm afraid of that the listener will get bored of from the many variations. I dont like when something get predictable. For example a Disco "music" is very predicatble: Tucc--tucc-ttuccc....I hate when a music is predictable, but you're right that doesnt mean that someone dont have to develop the theme. EDIT 2: I have so much different ideas, that I cant use in the same time, so when I start to write something I easily get bored since I have other 10000 ideas that I want to use just these ideas maybe dont fit with the previous one so I start a new work...and unfortunatelly thats why I rarely finish my pieces. I finish only the most interesting ones.
