August 23, 200718 yr What is your favorite symphony of Beethoven's nine and why? My favorite is number 6, particularly the first movement. I like the wonderful romanticism of it and the fact that Beethoven titled the movements with vivid phrases.
August 23, 200718 yr Beethoven 4 all the way. He has some amazing orchestral moments (especially the opening and the last bit of the 1st movement development), and while the music isn't neccesarily as profound as music from some of the other symphonies, the understated simple beauty of the 4th really touches me more than the other symphonies do.
August 23, 200718 yr I second the 4th - it has the best orchestration by far. I also like the third, especially the stravinskyesque moments in the development.
August 23, 200718 yr My favorites ... can I have more than one? ... are the 6th, because of its awesome tone painting, the third because of its amazing themeatic material and because it is a ton of fun to play (more so than any of his other symphonies), and the 9th because of its amazing orchestration, themeatic material, and the highly skillful use of a chorus and vocal solists. And they are preeeeetty. :(

August 25, 200718 yr I love the Funeral March from the 3rd Symphony (Eroica) There is something about the counter melodies etc that makes me love it and in several sections. the motion in the Bass to create momentum etc... Also, I am a big fan of the Shezro from the 9th and the 1st movement from the 5th... Yup, Beethoven was a beast (in a good way) and his Grosse Fugue for Sting Quartet really laid the path for contemporary music rather than romantic. Just amazing!!! Chris :-)
August 25, 200718 yr SIXTH SYMPHONY ALL THE WAY!! The fourth movement is the best depiction of a storm ever made in music, and the theme of the last movement is the best theme ever composed in musical history. Period.

It's not a triplet....at least, not at first (comes back later as a triplet, I believe, but that's besides the point). In the first movement, Beethoven's 5th symphony starts off with in 2/4 meter and the motif is simply 4 eighth notes (starting on the second one of the measure: ...and 2 and 1 (not 1 2 3 1) is how it goes, with the rest indicated by an ellipsis :)). Anyway, thought I should mention that so you know a triplet and three notes aren't the same ;). Oh, and Beethoven's 5th symphony is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite, though I'd probably say my favorite Beethoven symphony is his 9th.
