"puppet march" in Am

i know i havent posted music in a while, so i felt like i had to post this one since i laboriously hammered it out just now :D

this short piece (roughly 2:30) is designed for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoon, and strings

the moment of inspiration came to me when i went to my girlfriends house and she showed me this puppet she has had since she was a wee lit-le girl. she said it was so "cute", but when i saw this horrendous creation i thought it had been spawned from the devil. i saw it and began a trance-like daydream (which i always wind up doing, even around her...shhhh :sleeping:) about me shoving the puppet underground and have it buried alive. then i would go home and unfortunatly for me this puppet would rise from the dead and bring his minions in a vengeful plight against me. His march towards my house is what i have for you to listen to. :toothygrin:

i have the score coming soon but its a mess as it looks like vomit so ill have to clean it up soon

This is video-gamey and classic at the same time. I think it describes what you meant to portray quite well. The writing sounds idiomatic to me. I particularly liked the stacatto bassoon, it's a cool sound.

This is some great work here. Granted it works for incidental music, but it also stands alone very well. It reminds me of something, but I find what it reminds me of in my mind.

.......(This is when I am thinking hard to remember).....

I think that it reminds me of something out of the movie Fantasia by Disney. Maybe when Mickey was playing with the broom.

What I mean by that, is that it is in the style, not the same music.

Where are you hiding all the rest of your music? Surely you have composed more than just this one and the other one in the last 6 months. I would love to hear more.

Also what Software are you using to come up with this?

I am highly impressed with this!!!

Rolifer: hey Ron, glad you liked it! i have written more works, but they are what they are, and they in fact need lots and lots of work. i have some large scale projects underway, one is a 3 movement piano concerto (which the original plan was a piano sonata but i felt i needed more to get the idea out ) that im particularly excited about, but im not the best orchestrator yet and ive been studying scores like a mad man, mostly of shostakovich and stravinsky. i use Notion software but im not happy with it ( brass is HORRIBLE with it...but again i think i just dont know how to use the instruments properly :whistling: ). i can hopefully post and work on composing more if i get another break from school, drama, work, drama, and drama. thanks again for you time and criticism Ron :D:D

I really enjoy a work when it is neatly packaged in a shiny wrapped box.

From start to finish this work is well executed and thought out with a great grasp of structure and especially handling of themes and sectional distribution.

Um i love this piece. So quirky and fun and like Ron said, very Disney's Fantasia, which is not a bad thing. Really enjoyable.

Finally, someone whose piece i can listen to and have to wonder whether it belongs to a composer of past. This is such an awesome piece. What is best is how tension is built with the dynamics. I'm not sure where the climax was, but the whole piece got me waiting for something to happen. I think that 'something' was the end. I love endings. And you have created a masterpiece my friend. The score is a bit messy, as you said, but thats not even entirely your fault. i think the engraving on that program itself is dodgy.

Otherwise...i would love to hear more. Its great to see a composer who doesnt stick with I IV V VI chords...like myself (but hey, im trying to understand diminished and augmented chords yet) lol.

excellent job, and keep the work up. Ive saved this piece to my computer so i can listen to it when i am feeling cheeky lol.

Yes, he seems to have removed the score ...

The thing from Disney's Fantasia that people keep mentioning is actually a piece called "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Paul Dukas inspired by the poem of Goethe of the same name, Zauberlehrling. I think the reason people are making this connection, is because the stylistic resemblance and characteristic use of the bassoon and pizzicatos.

About that bassoon and other stuff, very effective use. This is a very mature composition. Like Ron, I am listening more than once. I absolutely love how you use all of the instruments equally, some people have a hard time maintaining that balance. Either way, it sounds like an old BGM cartoon, maybe even Bugs Bunny, and I love music that reminds me of old cartoons, it is so classic. :happy:

I noticed the absence of brass, why so? I don't criticize your decision to omit them, but I'm curious why you did. Are they too heavy for depicting the idea? Maybe you could make this one movement and write more movements about the different events in this little daydream of yours.

J4: hey thanks for the comment and time :D about the brass, i did use brass in a rougher version, it just didnt work out as well. its funny because the way i have it now is how i first started it, then went through various trials because i SUCK at orchestration......lol....anyway...about the idea of a multi-movement work, hmmm, interesting, i think ill consider. thanks again for your critique :)
