September Competition - Suggestions Thread

We've been waiting a long time for results from the past two competitions, so I thought while we all wait and send hate mail to the judges, I'd start a thread where we could discuss how to conduct next month's round.

Firstly - Do we want a competition in September? If so, shall it be one month, or two months long?

Secondly - Who will be in charge? This person, like any of the judges, cannot enter a piece into the competition. Mori has done it in the past, and Juji has done it. Juji... has been gone over a week and still hasn't posted results from the May/June Competition. Mori... still hasn't posted the results from the Feb./March Competition. We need a reliable judge who will at least tell us when they will be away for an amount of time or unable or unwilling to put the time into this. Mike has also talked of some automation system in the Competitions department. What of this, Mike? *poke*

Thirdly - We need suggestions for a competition theme. Once we have enough suggestions, we'll create a poll just like in the past and vote on the one for the next competition. Simple suggestions would be things like "A Rondo for String Quartet" or "A Piano Trio for the End of Summer." Try to suggest some original ideas. Nothing too difficult to adhere to, and nothing too boring. Feel free to look at past polls and take ideas from them.

Fourthly - How many people are interested? Post your thoughts here and we'll see if we want to do this. :)

My suggestions would be:

1. A piano trio (Piano, Violin and Cello)

or

2. A non-thematic piano piece without barlines (this was suggested last time)

As for an organizer, how about you Enigmus? I would say that I would do it, but I've only been part of, like, one competition, so I'm not completely sure how its done...

And my vote is for 2 months long....I like the extra time.

Just my 2 cents...:)

Computer music is music synthesized by a computer - it could entail anything from programs to what used to be music concrete to whatever.

I was just think of something that can be done in a relatively short amount of time, is different from what I've seen in the competitions, and I would enjoy.

To me, its like any other stylistic competition...

Why not a contest where the point is writing for the NES soundchip or something, or maybe using the mario paint music program. Something like that where you have a very limited resources and have to make them count.

SSC: You mean like Super Mario Bros. was done? They had only a couple voices and sounds, very limited? That sounds like a good idea... compose something today under those same constraints.

Gardener: You mean an orchestral piece that effectively uses a solo triangle at some point, and the focal point is that triangle part?

If there are any more suggestions, get them in. I might be making a poll soon. We'll see - this seemed to have sparked some interest. :shifty: By the way... last calls on a one-month or two-month round. I'd like to see one month, but I think people are leaning towards two months.

Lack resources? Well!

How about using famitracker? :> There are tons of ways of getting the chip sound in an authentic fashion which are, well, free.

Sure, it'll be a little hard to learn how to track from zero if you have no clue, but it's not so difficult. Plus the challenge is cool IMO.

Robin... I know he was being facetious, but I like the idea. It really rocks! And SSC, could we settle for synthesizer sounds? Squarewave, Sawtooth, etc.?

Well electronic/synth sounds is a whole lot of things.

I was thinking of something a lot more restrictive, such as the NES chip, or having a limited polyphony of only 3 or so voices + noise channel.

Or, how about, limited polyphony (3 voices) but all the effects you want. The polyphonic channels must be non-real instruments.

But I still would rather write for the Ricoh 2A03 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :x

The only practical way I see that we could do that is just to have the competitors write maximum of three voice polyphony for a trio of the same MIDI instrument that is preferably not a real instrument. I.E. GM 080 - Square Wave or similar plus having a drum track, Channel 10. But what kind of piece would it have to be? Anything possible under the constraints? Music as if for a real game? With a given scenario?

By the way, the poll has been posted. It will close on September 7th. By then I would like know if the community would prefer a one or two month round. Indicate your preference in the polling thread. Any further suggestions should be made there.
