Salvete, omnes! One of my friends in Ichigo's Forums told me about this site, so I decided to try it out. Anyway... I don't have a lot of music to my name, but I can say that I'm renowned in my school, district, and state as Best Composer thanks to the Reflections Program. ^^ I hope you enjoy my "magni opera," As my fellow Latin buffs call them.

Wow, currently listening to the Orchestrated version of Rhapsody III, and I like a lot of it! I think one comment I would make would be to continue the orchestration through out, don't just move the melody around. I love the timbre, though, especially the bells.

Like I said in the forum, I am envious of anyone who can write for piano, and I state the same right now. The piano parts of the Rhapsody and in the Pursuit of Happiness are true works of art. I would love to hear a piano concerto written by you, and that's saying something because I HATE piano concerti. You have a real gift here. Keep it working, and I'll be eagerly awaiting some of your future pieces.

Upon listening to three of your unfinished works (lamentations, prelude I, and Music Box Demon) I insist you write more. The only problem I have is that you use this twinkling motif in all three of them, and it ends abruptly with more block chords. Kind of one of those piano tricks that is really effective if you use the right amount of it.

The Music Box Demon, I seriously want to hear more of. I don't know if you listen much to soundtracks, but your style is very similar to Danny Elfman's. I love the playful yet twisted harmonies you play on with these bells. Again, it might be interesting to flush out the orchestration on this one, layer some low strings underneath it with some really menacing brass sections. Whatever you do with it, I want to hear more!

So your first composition(happiness), was rather boring. It sounded nice though but you tried to do too much in a short amount of time. Nothing really flowed and I kept wondering if you were just switching from piece to piece. Overall, I found a lack of devolpment and a sound which is heard here day in and out.

So your second piece sounded like your first piece. For a while I started to think about FF9. It remindef me of it for some reason. I think you really need to work on your choice of notes. You just seem to play notes because you fear silience. It all sounds too busy.

Oh gosh the same feel to this piece too. Well it ever change? I think not. I have to thank you. I have a friend from oklahoma who is a comp major here at ut. I have more ammo to use against him! It seems that the state is as boring as your music. Please change it up and find something more than video game rep off. If I wanted to hear video game type music, I would listen to the video game soundtrack written by the masters. I really do suggest breaking out of your bubble!

Eek. X_X I understand that "Pursuit of Happiness" isn't the most exciting piece in the universe, but was it really boring? Those are some pretty harsh words since I'm usually accustomed to high praise, especially on that piece. However, I'm not going to change my style just to satisfy your tastes; instead, I am going to let my style develop naturally through experience and musical influences.

Don't let these guys intimidate you. For starters, you are one of the very few composers here that can write a melody and you work it skillfully into the texture of your accompaniment. Most everyone else in this forum typically works with a "theme", which many times is a sorry excuse for a melody. Others, while very talented and skilled at arranging, work with what I would call, at best, a motif.

What I suspect they don't like in your music is what they consider to be a pop sentiment. If you're smart, you shouldn't let that bother you. It is an enviable natural skill that you possess. As you mature as a composer, you will be able to turn it on and off at will, and being able to turn it on may be the difference between who gets the gig and who doesn't.

Your style is very respectable as far as I'm concerned and if you choose to pursue game or film music then I can guarantee you'll be successful with pieces like that. A lot of the composers here are rather die-hard classical music buffs so it's often extraordinarily difficult to please them with any music that falls outside their sometimes limited comfort bubble.

That being said, your music fits the genre perfectly and you have a way with melodies. Keep it up and don't get discouraged, I want to see more! :innocent:

Okay so I am done listening to these pieces and have some general comments:

- I admire your ability to compose within the genus that you have selected. Your pieces all clearly fit into the same genre and are all well written for the genus.

- However, I do think that the pieces are somewhat tedious. You state that "I'm renowned in my school, district, and state as Best Composer" (and I apologise for this, but since you refrained from being modest, I will refrain from being nice), but I find this hard to believe. Your music is good, but...

1. The themes are not catchy in the slightest bit... not that they have to be, but it rendered this music uneventful and dull in my opinion.

2. Your harmonic structures sound exactly the same from piece to piece.

3. Although you are young, I have personally heard numerous composers your age who can do the same thing or much better... Standing out in the "Reflections Program" doesn't mean much.

- I don't want you to take this too hard, but I feel like your cockyness is not backed up by any music that deems it worthy.

I do apologise, but I cannot say that I enjoyed these pieces... this is just a matter of taste. You ARE a good composer--just remember that and keep doing what you're doing. I am positive that plenty of people enjoy this style much more than I do.

Marius, I know you well enough to respect your comments, but I seriously hope you weren't including me when you said this. Experiementing with music is one of my primary objectives. And no, I am not in the slightest bit a classicist.

I think perhaps some of the guys here are being a little biased. Put his "cockiness" aside and just listen to the music for goodness sakes. It's not easy writing music for the piano, keep that in mind as well. Although maybe some of the works are too short in my opinion, and may sound video gamish at times, (don't know why that would really be an issue anyway in this case, since he is crafty) I think he writes pretty well for the instrument. I also like his modernistic style. Although I disagree with some notation choices (personal preference) I didn't find the music boring in the least.

Some suggestions for improvement:

Try to expand on your music, the pieces are too short. By the time you caught my interest, the piece was over! Also, try avoiding the cliches, such as the arpeggio rundowns, unless you really know what you are doing.

Koji Kondo is videogame music. Koji Kondo is friggin awesome. Yes, his music needs improvement. But no reason for him to leave :shifty: oh and I consider orchestration habilities to be more important than melody writing.

I see what you mean about Final Fantasy IX. I think this is reminiscent of the little underground bit where they make Black Mages, as well as some other light-hearted bits. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, Nobuo's written some great stuff. Here, I'd like to hear more instruments than the piano alone, the piano writing sounds boring at times.

-Sigh- This is one of the things I hate most about this forum. All the guy said is that he's renowed in his SCHOOL for being a good composer. He never said he was the best composer in the world; it was slightly arrogant but not as bad as you guys are blowing it up to be. And you aren't much better; chiding him for being arrogant is one thing, but completely stepping out of the bounds of respect is NOT a very good thing to do.

And Nico, you didn't even REMOTELY try to be nice. "OMG I WON THE REFLECTIONS WHEN I WAS IN THE SECOND GRADE" isn't constructive at all.

Yes, the line to the effect of "Well, you're arrogant, but at least you're polite" made me giggle... :(

I'm afraid he said more than just his school. He said,. "I'm renowned in my school, district, and state." That is just making yourself seem better than you are. Ok, so Oklahoma is a scrafty state! I can understand why the music was so so, but no reason to make yourself better tha you really are. Plus his comment about not being used to negative reviews. More arrogance. He didn't like what I said, and what I said was repeated by other people. His music was repetitive and barely changed from piece to piece.

The first piece was beautifully written. Some parts were quite exciting and I love your use of dynamics. Good chord progressions and a good melody. The onlything I think you could improve on the first one is perhaps having the rhythm a little more exciting... the rhythm flows nicely and some parts the rhythm is awsome but there are sometimes where it isn't as interesting.

Ok so he was arrogant.

Does anybody think that being a jerk will stop him from being arrogant? If the style of the music is one you don't like you aren't qualified to critique other than saying it just isn't your style. If you didn't like the piece but have no helpful advice to improve the piece you are not qualified to reply and must be pretty arrogant yourselves to think you are somehow qualified to just say it sucks or its bad or your not all that or its boring.

He was cocky and arrogant but at least he had manners and a love for composing. People need to be a little more respectful.

If I was in charge of this website some of these posts would have been deleted. Useless posts belong in the off topic or free for all.

I think he was trying more prove to us that he is a legit composer in light of his plagurizer, and it came out sounding rather "arrogant". I don't think I've ever seen him act like this before in the other forums, though...
