Big Ugly Blues

Featured Replies

Quite amazing! Love etc! I really enjoyed it, and was dancing throughout. :D

I particularly loved the changes in atmosphere, and the ugly harmonies were brilliant. It sounded like a city junction full of cars.

The awesomeness of this piece requires periodic bumps

HAHAHA

Thanks!

:)

Dear Robin,

I happened upon this post once again and was compelled to remind you how loving awesome you are.

Yours Sincerely, Mark

Wow. I'm not really an experienced jazz listener, but this sounds great to my ears. The descending loop at the start was very catchy.

As for uglyness, I can't really tell where it was ugly. But then, I'm quite new to jazz.

 :)

Thanks guys. I appreciate you taking the time to listen... And Nigel, I'm sorry you didn't get the full 'ugliness' effect...the next performance will be uglier I assure you.

;)

Whoa.....sounds like Mingus. Who is my idol. KUDOS.

Love that little break in there with the tenor solo....some of those hits weren't perfectly lined up, but no one's perfect.....:P

LMAO! I love that slower halftime section....that u playing trombone? I thought it was gonna go into some slow stripper tempo big band thing, like the end of "Channel One Suite"....

If you haven't heard the piece "Turbine" by Frank Tichelli, this is almost similar- were all those chromatic runs/falls/glisses written out?

And I'm lovin' the Cecil Taylor piano solo.....

And that main theme comes back in again....very nice.....almost cliche ending, very well done!

Like I said, sounds pretty Mingus-y to me. I love it.

_Sorry if I said anything that's been already mentioned, I haven't read the other replies....

Kal,

Thanks for listening! Mingus was certainly the model for this one - wanted to capture the feeling of loose energy that's so inherent in all his music.

It is me playing trombone...not one of my finer moments, but it's something nonetheless.

As for the "chromatic runs/falls/glisses", some parts at the beginning were improvised with instructions in the part (i.e. "half-valve plunger licks, bluesy/raw" or "Mingus-ish collective improv" ). Before the piano solo it all decays into complete free improv...

Again, thanks for listening!!

Robin, this ROCKS. It didn't give me a feeling of 'ugliness', though. It's just a huge outburst of groove, passion and hormones, with little, hidden bits of melancholy underneath. I like this better than lots of Mingus stuff I've heard. The more dissonant, wacky parts were never displeasing to the ear.

I agree some of the solos could have been a little better, but as it stands I find it very satisfying musically. Two thumbs up.

HEY! Thanks a lot!

Glad you liked it! :w00t: :)

We'll try and make it a bit uglier next time ;)

Robin - This is the jazz I like and just don't hear too often. Love the A section especially and the Sacre like overlaying of various genres old and new yet thematically and harmonically tight.

The transition to the first sax solo felt a little unprepared -- too much drops off too soon - that just could be remedied with more time for the players to work out the improvs though.

Then, I love how you kind of recap the opening "feel' - this time the dissolution works though I do wish the pianist had a better bridge to he recap. In any event it reminds me of Ives piece "Fourth of July" --- you would love it!!!

Ending great, nice recall and great dissolution.

Overall, excellent work man and those guys had CHOPSSSSSSSS!!! MIGHTY, MIGHTY CHOPS to play your fiendish chart. I guess my only recommendation is you spend more time working on transitions -- hard to tell if it was the improvisers or the chart but they could have been a little tighter -- and you would not have lost the ugliness (Which I don't think it is!)

Because of the network I discovered this piece with ease :) Looks like an old submission, but I will revive this thread to point out to others that we do have some Jazz musicians on this site, and some very talented ones. I noticed at 2:30 it sounded like rush hour...a very cool effect you had going there (did you intend for that?).

I have no idea how to even even compose something like this, but it must take a lot of dedication and practice. Did you apply any reverb to this piece?

Hey! Thanks for listening! ...I'm glad the network eased your discovery ;)

2:30 rush hour - I totally hear where you're coming from! It was unintentional, but the whole spirit of the thing was in that Mingusy vibe - very URBAN and buzzing with the electricity of the CITY!!

As far as writing this way, it's just a matter of familiarity and, yeah...practice!

I may have added a tiny bit of reverb....

This reminds me of the tune by Charlie Mingus called Moanin'. I definitely dig it. Cool riffs, cool harmonies. And I love the down and dirty sound of it. Very real.

Thank you!

There was definitely a lot of Mingus influence happening for me at the time.
