Now this is soul! This feels so anxious, yet determined and graceful somehow: what an edgy rhythm! xD I really enjoyed this: the percussion and sax and piano just fit perfectly together, and the other instruments just give the main melody "body". Nice job! :)

Dude, this is crazy. I love it!

I don't really know too much about jazz notation (what do all those little lines mean...?)

So I didn't really follow the score too much. The Sax player was great! It wasn't really my taste, but I still really liked it.

Then the piano was AWESOME... I was salivating. :D I listened to that part like, three times. Very smooth. Then the trombone was nice cool and jazzy.

The instrumentation was interesting, I've never seen that arrangement before, but maybe that's just me... yay for tubas. :P

Those were my thoughts on the piece. I guess, to sum it up... I like it. A lot. :)

Th little lines are my own device to indicate improvisation, but in a "free-er, less rigid" approach...I guess. Essentially, it's me trusting the player more than I trust myself.

Glad you liked the piano section - Tom's a great player!

The instrumentation is again, my own invention - big enough to be dangerous, but small enough to be agile and maneuverable. The balance between brass and saxes is, I think, pretty solid and I LOVE writing for this ensemble....it's also kind-of a slightly inflated version of Carla Bley's band in the 80's.

:) Thanks again everyone for listening.

This is tremendous. And pretty ambitious.

I'm going to agree with one of the earlier comments, the ending feels like it isn't quite... there enough for me. Also, I really like where it's going right before it cuts off--and I think it should continue doing that for some time longer than it does. Ah well.

Overall it's a nicely unified piece, and, I think, well orchestrated.

Hrrrmm, what do you think about the drummer's interpretation at rehearsal mark C? The instruction reads "double time feel", but to me it feels like the previous DnB-style had a quicker "feel". It feels to me like we're losing activity rather than increasing it at this point.

Thanks for listening, glad you dig it.

The ending is certainly a bit abrupt; in performance, this piece segued into "Asleep, Just Like The Others" so the energy maintained some forward momentum into that one.... The way the texture clears out and opens up works pretty well in that situation.

I should probably rewrite the ending a bit if I intend on performing this tune on its own. :hmmm:

The drums at C - fair enough. I think I had expected to go to more of a swing/double time fee and get away from the DnB-style. With one rehearsal one can't be too picky though - you have to choose your battles - and this slipped through. I do get the sense of "losing activity" so, I'll be sure to address this in the future !!

:) Thanks again for listening.

I love this tune. The dark, ominous section at the end was beautifully written. The trombone voice was the perfect compliment to the feel and kept it in that cool tenor range (from the tenor sax). Very nice.

Thanks for listening - I'm particularly fond of this one, that last half in particular. :)
