I'm not sure if this site is meant for someone so young, but I have an extremely gifted pianist son, Jett, who has been composing/improvising since he was 5 1/2. He has a true gift of expression, a great memory and a love for music. He has been playing in Jazz groups since the age of 7 with and is now also playing sax in the group. He played with the middle school jazz group when he was 8 last summer. I am looking for info. on the best approach to develop his gifts, performance opportunites, and tips on recording and notating his music. Any advice or tips on developing a young musician talents would be greatly appreciated!

Best of luck...get him a teacher. Find a serious jazz player in your town, and get advice that way. One on one is the only way to go; online we can have no idea how Jett plays, how he wants to play, what he's doing wrong/right...

My only advice, when it comes to jazz playing/writing: make sure he listens as much as he practices...maybe more.

Dear all! I've just joined this forum and am amazed of so many such a great composers! I am happy to find this forum!

I am a trained pianist but not trained composer, I just sincerely transmit my feelings through my instrument.

Thank you and wish all of you lots of inspiration!

I am relatively new to the 'tonal' world of music and decided to take the plunge. I have always been passionate about music, but never truly approached it in a mature fashion. I have always been appreciative of art music, but never took it quite seriously. I grew up listening to my brother and sister play in elementary, junior, and high school bands. I started off as a violist, but changed quickly to percussion. From there I managed to narrow my education to marching percussion and am now trying to branch out. I am in my 3rd year as a music education major and truly enjoy every moment of it... even the struggles. I have very little composition background other than brief works in theory classes and snippets of ideas. I am forever grateful to the amazing and motivating teachers I have had. Though I foresee composition being a 'side gig' to teaching, I can only imagine how composition as an artistic outlet will contribute to my appreciation.

I look forward to discussions, critique of my own works, and as I gain the necessary knowledge... critique of each of yours.

Thank you!

Welcome everyone! :)

I hope you all stay here at :yc:

Hey all. My name is Dustin, and I'm a young composer from the US. I'm almost eighteen years old and am here to look for musical company, inspiration, advice and discussion until summer when I go out to prepare for college. I'm attending Berklee College of Music in Boston this Fall as a Fretless Electric Bass principal and a composition major.

Welcome to the forums.

Hey, peoples!

I'm Shane, a 30-something performer and wannabe composer. I've referred to your forums on a few occasions when looking for help with Finale 2009 and thought it was about time I said hello rather than lurking.

I'm currently working on an original score for a musical, using Finale and trying to figure out how to make some professional-quality recordings of my work. So far I'm fairly satisfied with GPO but there is still a very limited range of instruments. Anyone with advice on how to make the most of Finale for my purposes?

Thanks for being here. I look forward to interacting with you all.

Hello!I'm Eliana.I've been playing the piano since I was 5 and started composing at 13.I'm not professionally trained so my works are really poor and I wish I could learn more here.Nice to meet you all!

Hi, I'm Mike, from the UK. I play the piano and have been composing ever since I can remember, though properly since I was 13.

What about you?

" I was a prodigy since i was 4 years old though i did not play any instruments until i was a teen, i used to hum themes exhaustingly and people thought i was crazy. But it served me right for later i began to compose for the piano with immediate results.

Hello new members - welcome.

Marzique, please upload your compositions to a music forum if you seek feedback. This thread only functions to make introductions. The music forums list is on the main page. You may create a thread in a forum (depending on the type of piece) and upload your work there :)

Hi you, very nice to talk to you.I am a university student major in music editing for tv and radio programmes.I start playing piano at age of 4,unfortunately I haven't got any music writing course.with the situation above,I can still play some improvisational piece by myself which makes me feel satisfied.

Hoping to share my interests with you!

Welcome to :yc: everyone!!! :w00t:

But why is Leigh a guest...?

Nice to have you on the forums, jojodi! I can see that my little advertisement over at GFF was not in vain after all.

Hah, my screenname. I'm quite proud of it as it unites two of my biggest obsessions under one dorky, yet clever screenname that I now use for EVERYTHING online. In Sindarin Elvish (Tolkien, Lord of the Rings):

aerlinn = song, hymn

dan = smith (extracted from Sindarin words for goldsmith and blacksmith)

aerlinndan = song-smith = composer

So there you have it! :D

 Great idea man!

Welcome to :yc: everyone!!! :w00t:

Chopin resurrected my old account

I needed help for something on FINALE ALLEGRO AHHH...and accidentally discovered this wonderful site! My name is Holly but someone already took that name...so I used one of the names of my characters from my Egyptian opera. I mostly want to compose for opera, light opera, musicals, animated films, live-action movies... ALWAYS comedy. Or adventure with comedy in it most of the way through. There are enough tears in the world already.

I guess I started writing music when I was twelve, when I heard a jazz song, lyrics, melody and arrangement for a big band featuring a clarinet solo in my head all at once. Then, I sat there and cried because I didn't know how to write it down. Now, the only thing getting in the way is...this...poopy program..I'm this close to buying sibelius...does anyone know how to NOT have the staves for every instrument there when they're not playing, so the score isn't so large? I'm trying to write for a piece with like 18 parts and I'm going craaaazy...

does anyone know how to NOT have the staves for every instrument there when they're not playing, so the score isn't so large?
Optimize the score. Check your Help file to see how, it's very simple.

Don't go to the dark side, you'll regret it. Trading hemlock for strychnine isn't really an improvement, eh?

Don't listen to him! He's nuts! :P

Hi! I'm Bryan Zhong. I live in Manila, Philippines. I am now 20 years old, I started piano playing at 18yrs. old (a late bloomer I am). I am steadily becoming adept at the art of improvising at the piano.

My country is probably the crappiest nation who has little regard for investing on pianists and yet ironically many people like piano music. I am currently a student in the Ateneo de Manila University. I do a few piano recitals there myself privately on school.

I am currently learning the piano sonatas and studies of Muzio Clementi, who I have a high regard amongst all the other piano composers. To an extent, I also like the works of Beethoven and Hummel. I hate baroque, romantic, and modernist music etc.

I am in love with compositions during the classical-romantic transitional era.

Nice to meet you all! Is anyone here a M. Clementi fan?

Welcome to :yc:

I love Clementi's sonatas! ;)

Hey I'm Kelley. I reside in Chicago and go to school (college) for composing. composing is a huge field of knowledge, and I hope to learn as much as possible. Hopefully I can learn more from just being on the site.

I really like to analysis pieces, (along with composing them) so if anyone wants talk analysis hit me up!

amid the turmoil, a new member arises...

welcome.

please, enjoy your stay.
