HAHAHAHA!!! ...Robin's a girls name!!!!!

We should know  Me, at least

A guy from another forum I frequently stopped by added me on MSN once. We talked sometimes for a few months, and then he says: "You know, you kinda look like a guy on your picture.". I ask: "You think I'm a girl because of my name?". Then he said: "You're a dude?! :O"

I never heard from him again. I laughed so hard I almost had to cry.

Wow, in all those chats you never said things that would have revealed you gender?

Also, I can imaging the whole revelation being quite funny!

Hi all,

I am Tom from England living in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

"Young Composers". So what am I doing here? I am not young (I am 54), and I am not a composer (at least not much of one) - I am a pianist.

Good question, then, Tom. But this place isn't for composers that are young in age, but rather ones that are young in experience, so you fit right in and you certainly aren't the oldest bloke floating around the board! Welcome to the site!

Also... I'm plagued with a mental image of Robin Jessome playing his trombone whenever I hear the name "Robin". That and I immediately think "shity" (sic). :shifty: Robin, however, also makes a very cute girl's name, I think. Note my use of the word "also" instead of "primarily." :P

Hello all, my name is Maty

That still makes you a lot younger than Purcell, Beethoven and Debussy!

Well, there were probably about ten chats over a timespan of two months or so. I can't remember if I said anything else that indicated my real gender, but it was all very funny

Which instrument where you at all-states for? Horn or flute? If horn you have a friend. ;) What are you going to uni for? Music we hope? :)

Bah, questions questions questions. Welcome!

Horn...sorry for late reply! I kind of forget about this neck of the woods.

And as of now, I'm not going for music, but for international business...but who knows. I'm sure I'll change my mind 1 or 2 or 78 times.

Do you know the etymology of the name Robin?

A certain percentage of parents have always named their children for themselves/their spouse (think: Robert Downey, JR.). There's always been the problem of telling the older and the younger person apart. Frequently people differentiate between Sr. and Jr. (and III and IV, etc.) by using the "Big" and "Little" designations (i.e., "Big Steve" and "Little Steve" for father and son respectively).

In older times, they would make a name diminutive by adding '-kin' to the naming (a pet meaning for 'small'). So Fred's son Fred could be called 'Fred-kin', etc. Robin comes from this process - Robert, Robert's son 'Robert-kin', and eventually shortened to 'Robin'. Alternatively... Robert's daughter Roberta could end up as 'Robin' in the same manner.

This same process is how 'John' gets turned into 'Jack'.

THANK YOU FLINT, I have been trying to figure out the Jack thing for ages now.

That's interesting to learn indeed!

Cool. Never knew it would be something like that. Thanks for the history lesson.

Hi music lovers,

I am in the process of composing a theme and variations movement for string quartet. I've dabbled in music composition for a few years but haven't got anywhere yet.

I use Sibelius software, and have just ordered Sibelius 6.

The first half of my theme is a 12 tone row, and the second half is almost another 12 tone row.

There are about 6 or 7 variations so far. I've just started a variation by placing each note of the theme as a quaver. The theme itself moves along in minum, crotchet, minum, crotchet rhythms.

I use harmonies that often include four tone sonorities. There is usually at least one interval in the harmony that is a tone. I often use the tri-tone. I strive for a rich harmonic texture. I find myself avoiding the perfect fifth much of the time.

Anyway, I hope to complete my movement soon and hopefully post it for some review.
