After just jumping into a discussion, here's my introduction:

I'm Joost, 26 yrs old, from Belgium. I started composing seriously only 2 years ago, not counting some youthly experiments when I was younger.

I studied piano, violin and composition, mainly in Belgium...composing is what I like best :)

Any other Belgian people around here?

current working projects:

2 composition competitions, due to the end of july and the end of october

a music theatre piece, colaboration with a German writer

meanwhile exploring as well some sketches for a piano concerto and the possibilities of microtonal writing...

So, all the best - this seems an interesting spot to post some stuff!!

Well, Joost, you sure DID jump into some discussions, I didn't even notice you were new! So welcome! And you're sure right, this is an interesting spot to post some stuff! I'm pretty new around here too, bee here for around two weeks, I'd say.

Guess I'll jump in too!

Hi everybody, I'm Bram. I'm 20 years old, and I've been calling myself a composer since age 15 or so. I'm heading into my third year studying composition, theory, and now conducting at Yale. Before I got to college, I was self-taught on the harmonic brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Phil Collins, a mistake that will haunt me the rest of my life. Partially healed by real music study, my favorite composers are now Beethoven and Mahler, and I'm influenced mostly by the late Romantics and the modern tone-poem-ists.

I write a wide variety of stuff. I started with choral music, and have expanded to write tone poemy stuff, longer-form large-ensemble stuff, musical theatre, art song, and incidental music, mostly for the stage, though I'm looking for films to score too.

My biggest theoretical obsessions are chromaticism and the use of tonality in a vertical sense but not a horizontal sense. You can guess I'm a fan of directional tonality and the sort of wandering tonality used by Wagner, Faure, and Shostie. And I'm not too hot on Schenker. I also orchestrate.

My greatest weakness is that I'm terrified of composing. Every time I look at a sheet of blank staff paper part of me wants to run screaming, because I'm afraid of what will happen when I get to the end of whatever idea is currently running through my head. I've been there countless times, of course, and nothing happens. So I'm working on getting over myself and just writing more :-)

Current projects include a choral setting of the Requiem Agnus Dei, an art song set of Frost poems (yeah I know about the lawsuit, but as long as I don't publish them I figure I can get away with it), a musical to Chaucer's "The Knight's Tale," and two program symphonies. If I can get them structured, that is. Current pet peeve: Nobody ever tells you, "this is how you write a twenty-minute movement." Where's the course on that!? I guess it's called "MUSI 511: Trial and Error in Long-Form Composition."

If you wanna chat, IM me, I'd love to talk! See you all around the forums -- I'm glad to be here.

Hi Bram,

Welcome to Young Composers! I’m new here myself and just made my intro post on the previous page.

You experience with music is impressive. I have very little experience with music myself as I have only recently become interested in music. You caught my attention with the term “Tone Poemy Stuff”, can you elaborate a bit on just what that is, or link to some examples?

I have written a lot of poetry and I have been interested in converting it into music, either via song, or just inspired instrumental orchestration. Does “Tone Poemy Stuff” actually have anything to do with poetry?

James

:)Hello fellow composers. My name is Juliette Jazz and I'm probably older than most of you, but I have only been writing lyrics for two years, so I'm relatively new to this also. I have, however had over 20 years of professional performing experience, so I am able to record my own songs and other people's if they need a vocalist. In the last 2 years I have written over 70 lyrics and recorded 24 songs. Some of which I am quite proud of, and a few that I wouldn't play to anyone :) I am constantly on the lookout for composers and musicians to turn my words into songs If anybody would like to view my lyrics and some of my songs, they are posted at [url=http://www.sharemylyrics.com/Juliette_Jazz , I welcome any collaborations.

My name is Adam. I'm from Tx. I've been playing piano for 14 years and have been composing for 12 years. = ) Some of my fav. composers ( modern ) are: Danny Elfman, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber

Ah, a mild heretic. Thou shall be converted under our holy torch :P

Webber is the Britney Spears of classical music.

You dare call Webber classical music? Silly norwegian fairy.

I was just using it for effect, to add insult to your mild scratch-of-the-surface.. Mr clueless

I knew you were really a Spaniard. Let the Inquisition begin!

That's it. Portugal v. Norway, right now. Obviously, it will be a naval battle. I expect the Norwegians to start the fight with a volley of rotten, stinky fish. The Portuguese will respond with an embargo, trading with other Scandinavian countries until the Norwegian currency is devalued. 1,000,000 kroner for a loaf of bread? stfu!

Sounds like our prices on alcohol....

Those are mean battle tactics, man. Vindictive embargoing. It can work, as history shows :-p As for Andrew Lloyd Webber, I am convinced my exposition to his music at the time I began teaching myself composition permanently ruined my career. I'll never forgive him... or myself... ugh. Sugary diatonic goodness = barfilicious.

Hi everyone

My name is Cath and I'm 19 years old. I've started composing not so long ago. Some months back I decided for myself that I'm gonna try and become a game or movie composers. I love playing MMORPG's so I started to make some phantasy-ish songs for those games ... just to experiment a little.

Anyways, I've got lots to learn and I want to take every opportunity.

Well, that's it for now.

Hey I'm Rod. I play piano, guitar, and high brass and just like writing.

Hey Cath and Rod! Welcome to the forum, how are you guys?

Hey, I'm Brennen, I'm 13 and I play the Piano. I've been playing since I was 5 and I just started composing. My favorite genera is Ragtime, and my songs tend to be fast and syncopated. I found out about this site while looking for tips online and it looks promising.

Welcome Brennan!

Hi, my name's Adrian. I'm 18. I've started composing half a year ago. I play the piano a bit. I am from Moldova, a tiny country in Eastern Europe.

Lately music has become a big part of my life.

Well, that's all I can say for now.

Adrian
