I have never really written any fully composed songs that would be considered original, but I usually arrange songs for my friends. I am a Junior in high school and hope to major in music composition in college (yayy i'm almost there!)

Couldn't help but notice the username. Because it lists all the instruments that fall into the category of "instruments I sometimes claim to play, but am so embarrassingly bad at that I probably shouldn't claim to play them." :musicwhistle:

Welcome to YC.

I'm Craig Toomey. Been playing music since I was 5 and I'm 32. Know how to play piano, drums, bass, guitars, and sing. I compose mostly rock music but want to learn from the other veteran composers in this forum who write full scores. I'm not good at notation but I can play anything I hear basically and the scores are up in my head, just need to get on paper. I use primarily Pro Tools LE 7.3 (any questions, drop me a line), and Fruity Loops XL (love this program) to compose. Love virtual instruments and midi that's programmed using high end velocity samples and feel, and anything related to such!

Hey Im Patrick. Im 13 and I play Violin Viola Cello Bass Electric Bass Clarinet Mandolin Piano organ and Sing in the Indianapolis Children's Chior. I've been composing music since I was 5 years old. My composition style is Boroque and Romantic era style. My favorite song type is Contradance. I use Finale and regular manuscript to write music and I have developed a type of String Orchestra Tablature.

Hi my names adam and I am 17. I've been composing since I was 13, when I started music school. But I've been a fiddler since grade 3, unfortunately i gave up for four years then picked it back up around 7th grade and ive been playing every since. I play a few other instruments, obviously piano since i compose and a bit a guitar plus i can wing any bowed string instrument. A little bit about how i've learned compose is through school, my teacher puts on proffesional quality musicals, and since i am not her i wont advertise her name....thatd be rude ya know!

ANYWAY! other than all this music n such id like to make a few friends here and maybe get some tips, sadly im absolutely paranoid about people stealing my compositions, counter productive i know. well toodles and if you wanna get to know me better my AIM is mrblackkat

Welcome new folks....hope you stick around.

...I have developed a type of String Orchestra Tablature.

I'd like to hear more about this...perhaps you could start a thread?

I'm Primm - I like video games, chiptunes, metal, and eurobeat.

I compose for all of the above.

Hoping to meet some interesting and informative folk?

Hi I'm Lars Asp from Denmark. I have a masters of arts in music and aspire to become a film composer. As of now I've taken classes in Hummie Mann's Pacific North West Film Scoring Program and attended a course with film composer S

Hi, My Name is Matthew and I write music (which is probably redundant)

I've been writing music for only about 6 months now in a style that I like, but I've been creating my own music since I started to take piano lessons when I was 10, and I'm 17 now.

I play the piano, too. I'd say I'm strongest on the piano. I also play the pipe organ and the french horn (and bits of trumpet)

Hey, I'm Rob I make Hip Hop/Rap/R&B beats and thought i needed some esposure and if anyone wants to hear my beats their at MySpace.com - cashed beats - CU - Hip Hop / Rap / R&B - www.myspace.com/cashedbeats and if you like them tell me also if you know anyone who would like them to me too, thanks.

I'm Dave. I'm a film composer, but I also write for commercials as well. In my free time I work on my own music, which is all over the place. I'm influenced by everything from post-punk to baroque pop a la The Left Banke, experimental electronic music (Varese, Terry Riley, all the way through Matmos and their peers), hip hop producers like J Dilla (RIP) and Madlib, all kinds of indie rock, be-bop and other jazz forms.. Being a library composer is amazing in that it allows you the freedom to experiment with mimicking styles, analyzing grooves and motives from different genres. Anyway, there's clearly a lot of talent on this board and I'm very happy I found it.

Hi, I'm Jake.

I'm a 17 year old violinist (I also play piano, of course) from Ontario, Canada, and I will be beginning my post-secondary education on the violin next year at a yet-to-be-determined university. (auditions in february/march)

Recently I've been looking into beginning composing things, as composition is a requirement for HL Music in the IB Diploma Programme.

My theory teacher told me to just write something/anything for now, to get a feel for where I am, but I was wondering, where is the best place to start? (what is a simple and easy form to start with? Something very structured, or something less structured?)

Thx in advance for any help!

Hello and welcome.

Structure will keep things organised, I think you should try something simple at first, just an "A-B-A" structure with a melody over chords, and then move on from there.

Good luck!

Heya

im stuart, im 14 and im from the UK, contrary to how im typing i do actually have a grasp of grammar, its just that im tired today and really cant be bothered :)
