Hello everyone,

I'm Matt, and I'm 23 and I live in Massachusetts. I study music at a local community college, and i will be receiving my A.A. in May. Trumpet is my primary instrument, and I am also studying piano. I have a great desire to learn about composition. I have written some small compositions in my Music Theory classes so far, just simple chorale harmonizations and the opening sections of an invention and a fugue (I'll probably post those here at some point)

Anyways, this is a great forum, I've been lurking around for a little while now, and finally decided to make a formal introduction. I'm looking forward to this!

Welcome, how long have you been playing trumpet Matt?

Hey! I'm Brennan and I'm 21 now studying at Central Washington University for a degree in Theory/Composition under Dr. Eric Flesher.

Since receiving a Lennon/McCartney songbook on my 16th birthday, I've been obsessively learning and listening to new music every day. In my past few years of university level study I've developed a love for Classical music... especially the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, and Chopin.

I've played Guitar and electric bass for about 5 years now and piano for about 2. I'm always interested in broadening my musical horizons, often I'll laugh when my Ipod shuffles from 'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun' (debussy) to 'Shame on a Nigga' (wu-tang clan).

I'm not quite brave enough to post any works I have up here, maybe after a few more quarters of study, as I still have much to learn about compositional style. Although I do have a number of brief musical ideas floating around, none of them are near completion. Great to be here!

Hey everyone, I'm Westy.

After googling "music composition forum", I got directed to many forums that looked bad, so I tried "young composers forum", and you guys were the first link. After a quick browse through this site, I decided I'll start foruming here.

Anywayz, about me - I'm 16 years old in Australia, and I started getting into composition after I got the program Sibelius a few years ago.

I also play violin as my main instrument (under John Quaine) and piano as my second instrument.

There are a few reasons why I decided to start on a composition forum - one is that I just started getting board of previous forums (I've posted on PalGN, UTF Gamers and Gamer Hold - all gaming forums), another reason is that if I am to really get into composition, I should probably be in some way be attached to the composition community, also I'm hoping to learn a bit more about composition software, so I'll be in that subforum a bit later on.

As for my compositions - at the moment I've been mainly writing techno and rock (probably due to the influence of all the Guitar Hero III I've been playing), I've also written some orchestral and ensemble stuff - nothing that anyones ever played though.

The last thing I should ask (since I am far to lazy to read through the forum rules), how tight are you with 1) Language and 2) Talking about Illegal things that everyone does anyway like download music?

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome.

1) We would like you (assuming you're a native speaker) to use correct English, and avoid internet slang. Correct spelling and punctuation, etc., make posts much easier to read, and mean you're more likely to get a response.

2)You may talk about and discuss, for example, music sharing, but you may not post links to illegal downloads, or sites which contravene copyright.

Please read: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/faq.php?faq=board_rules

;)

Thanks Daniel.

I am a native English speaker, as for the "internet slang", I guess it's no biggy to have to check over my posts and fix up a few words before posting it ;) (and the good forums tend to use good grammar, etc anyway)

Well good to see that you have a positive attitude about it. :)

I'm sure you'll get along fine here - hopefully learn lots, and contribute to the community.

Well, welcome to yc and as I have said before, don't become a ghost to our establishment

Hello everybody. I'm excited to have found these forums and to post some music

I've written songs since I was about 10, but recently began to write more serious pieces, and have been having a lot of fun. Instrument-wise, my primary instrument is piano, but I've also played alto saxophone for many years, have taught myself how to play acoustic guitar, and have recently learned how to play accordion.

I started composing when I was about that age as well, sort of. I wrote tiny ditties when I was 7-9 but they aren't that great. So I consider my first real piece to be the one I wrote when I was ten. Piano is also my primary instrument along with electronic keyboard. I've tried the sax, I got fed up with it though.

Anyways, welcome to the forums! :)

Welcome, all. It's nice to see new faces continuing to arrive, as always.

Don't forget to have a very quick scan of the board rules to make sure you're primed and ready to go. :)

Please stop posting in this thread. No one cares about you. We don't need your life story. Name, age and location will do. Not like this:

I would say to that, likewise... :w00t:

I just signed up in order to be able to use the search function of the forum.

I'm helping to increase the average age of the forum members, although a young composer can be of any age.

I like a variety of music, in particular the kinds that Baldr dislikes...

I composed my first, very traditional piece when I was eight.

I then moved on to electronic music before it become fashionable and mainstream and was divided into many different genres.

I have composed music for film, art shows, and live performances such as dance. I'm back into composing, after a long absence doing non-music related work.

I'm no longer as angry at the world as I used to be and have no desire to change it. I see it change by itself beyond believe, which is a concern.

I'm somewhat self-centered, hence each sentence in this post starts with "I".

Hey, this one bites back.. Kudos to you, sir.

Hi I'm Simon from Montreal,Canada.I've been composing computer-generated music for the last 3 years and have also had long-time experience as a pianist.I look forward to exchanging ideas ans feedback with other members.I Probably don't qualify as a "young composer" since I'm in my mid-50's,but i feel young at heart anyways.

Welcome solaris44. Always nice to have more Canadian content on here!

Hi, i'm Miranda from China. i'm a self-taught pianist and guitarist. i've been learning harmony and counterpoint for a while (self-taught of course, so i look forward to getting some tutors, at least some directions!)

besides, my english is still on the way...

Hi I'm obogz. I play guitar and piano. I like to create music whithout considering the rules. After a heard a few clasical masterpices I decided to start compozing whit the rules to obtain a more complex sound. So here I am...

Robin, isn't that what you said last time?

Welcome Miranda, you're not the first self-taught person to find this site, and I'm sure neither was I. :P And obogz, same thing... I didn't know rules, so I learned them myself to make 'better' music.

People around here are great, you all are bound to learn something new before long. ;)

Just wanted to say hello to everyone out there! My name is Janae and I have been composing music since I was a toddler. My main instrument is the piano. I currently work as a private music teacher. Besides music, I love fashion design, cooking and spoiling my two dogs. Have a great day!

Hi,

I have been composing since I was about 7 but have only been composing with proper harmony and form for a few years. I'm looking forward to discussing music composition with everyone here!

Hello,

I've been composing for a couple of years now, but I've only started to write anything decent recently. I play the alto saxophone and believe that it is highly underrated as a classical instrument. Anyone who disagrees with me will likely be at the other end of a series of long and angry emails :P. I mostly listen to 20th century classical music - I like the symphonies of Shostakovich, Penderecki, Pettersson, Creston, Vagn Holmboe and Simpson to name a few, but, as you've probably guessed I'm a big fan of classical saxophone music. My favourite pieces for the sax are Tableaux de Provence by Paule Maurice and Paul Creston's wonderful sonata, as well as Dubois's light and quirky quartet. I am entirely self taught as a composer, and I would say that my best pieces are probably my smaller chamber works, although I have attempted to write a symphony, which turned out alright, but had many flaws. I am currently working on a saxophone concerto.
