February 19, 201016 yr Interesting use of motivic material. How the rhythmic motifs reemerge, I liked that. While it does sound a bit bare, I'm sure a better recording (with reverb) could fix that. Not a bad piece.
February 20, 201016 yr I find it a bit hard to comment on pieces like this, because I think they're both interesting, but on the other hand also balancing between just not good at all, and intriguing. I think there's a little bit of both in this prelude. I didn't like the beginning very much, frankly there's not very much in it, and what is there just doesn't sound interesting. It intensifies at bar 7, and becomes increasingly more interesting with bar 18 as a sort of climax, which I on the other hand find good. The small chromatic movement works but the B at the end ruins it for me. It feels like an anticlimax because it's neither upsetting nor intriguing, it's just there. And a small "chinese" sound at the end, I liked that. I'm looking forward to more of your pieces, it's always interesting to hear contemporary piano compositions :)
February 21, 201016 yr I think this is better than the other piece you uploaded: it just has more "sense" to it, while still being kind of "out there". I find myself whole-heartedly agreeing with Silasj on this one: he said all the things I'd have talked about, like the seemingly pointless beginning, but interesting chromatic movement in the later parts. If you're going to compose in a contemporary style, you need to make sure that if your music doesn't exactly sound great, that it is at least intriguing or interesting through-out. Don't bore a listener with too much pausing and minimalistic chords and progressions (because minimalism rarely works well with contemporary styles). Thanks for sharing ;)
