Short Fanfare

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I feel like I've been writing a lot of more minimalistic stuff recently (or at least sharing such), and I watched Indiana Jones earlier today which got me thinking I needed to write something a bit more involved and have a bit of fun. The resulting short fanfare below was basically an hour or so of musical WHEEEEEEEE. So. I hope you enjoy! :D

Short Fanfare

you never cease to amaze me.....

that was awesome

this is very good . also i didnt really see anything like john william's style . maybe a little with ur woodwind , but i think its more of other composers styles. its really good! keep it up!

heya mate! this was very very good! congrats!! :D

Wow Marius!

This is definetly Williams inspired, yet there are still many individualities in your orchestrtions.

I love this. I'm just sad it didn't go on longer! :D

[EDIT: BTW What sound library do you use?]

Hey guys,

You know it's actually a big compliment that you can pull out my own style from this rather than just make comparisons to other composers — so thank you all for that, it means a lot.

Rick, I'll do some longer things soon, this was just sort of a fun little thing to pass the time on a lazy afternoon. :P As for what library, the key is that it's actually plural: libraries. Lots of them. Combining several is the only way I get the flexibility and sound quality that I'm after, so what you're hearing has some EWQLSO Gold Pro XP, some LASS, some Symphobia, some Hollywoodwinds, some individual brass libs from SampleModeling and VSL, percussion from like 3 different places....it's all over the map :P

Pretty solid work from you as usually ... but not what I've come to expect from you. Maybe because I really expected a "fanfare" in the traditional sense and you delivered more of a filler or scene change cue. Seemed really typical and off the shelf, I didn't think Williams but I did hear "you" in there. LOVED the wee horn bit at 00:26. xD Good orchestration from you as usual and libraries are fantastic as always.

Exceptional stuff here M. I must say I'd rather have your music on some of todays hollywood blockbusters. I just watched the Solomon Kane movie today, and the movie is pretty good, but I was just disappointed with Klaus Badelt's soundtrack.

Anyway, back to the topic: I enjoyed this very much, I like the trumpets staccato, they sound really good and cut trough the mix. I like the ending phrase repeated on different instruments, it was just cool. The only thing I might want to hear is a bit less reverb on the percussion, but thats just me.

Have you used some of the new string libraries you got?

James: You're absolutely right about it being a bit off-the-shelf, as you put it. I spent so little time on it that it's really not an exercise in creativity so much as just keeping up my orchestration/production skills on a larger level and testing out some new library techniques. Glad you noticed those horns — they were one of the parts that I tweaked in my template. I think the sound is much nicer now. I'll make sure to showcase them a bit more in the next thing so you get more than just that one bitty phrase to judge by.

Phant: That's always flattering to hear, I'm glad you liked it! The Solomon Kane score was disappointing, I wholly agree with you there, not sure what happened with it. Just mediocre. Anyway, interesting note on the percussion: was there a specific bit that sounded too reverby to you? The reason I ask is because there are several "layers" of percussion in my scores, each with different reverb settings so I want to know which was bothersome if I go tweak.

EDIT: sorry, hadn't noticed your strings question! No, I haven't used them yet in a piece...still working on figuring my way around them first so I can play them naturally. I'll let you know when to look out for them though!

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

WHEEEE!

I commented on your track a few times and here's what I said:

0.01:
BANG!

0.16:
Interesting arrangements. You have some interesting tribal stuff like this funky woodwind in centre. Very nifty.

0.41:
Nice mixing. Everything comes across clearly. The trombone in the centre channel sounds a bit too close. It's nice and clear but a bit too in my face.

0.56:
Great call and response. Panning the instruments from left to right was smooth.

Nice work, Marius. You and your templates and composing things super fast *shakes fist* :P

Peace on Earth,

-John

You noticed my tribal woodwind!!! :D

I was so happy with that little whisp of sound in there. Creative orchestral textures ftw. The Trombone is new in the template so I'm still trying to slot it in perfectly....will take a look and see if I can push it back a bit, thanks for pointing that out!

I do what I can :) But yeah, creative orchestral textures indeed ftw especially if your emulating Williams. He's very creative with his.

Well I've always noticed a bit too much reverb on your percussions, especially on the high-pitched snare-like instruments, stick hits and something like that. You know, the stuff that you don't usually use on a down beat, but rather as fill-ins.

still able to bring a smile, your orchestration and parts, breaks, all working to a tingling tensed degree. hate to say as usual, but its always 10 with your pieces.

Phant: It's funny, people used to say my percussion was too upfront, now it's too far back xD Must find that golden middle ground...

J: Hey, as long as it's honest, it's all good! I'm glad it worked for you, even if you hate saying it :P

Many thanks, all! Comments are always helpful.

Well it's been a hell of a long time since I've been around here, but I figured I'd stop in and see whats up. Came across this great little track, Marius... wonderful work, as usual!

I didn't mention this first time around, but a few posts reminded me - I noticed your "tribal" woodwinds and that trombone. They stuck out to me and I think you did a good job at fitting them in there nicely and semi-showcasing them. Liked the use.

Thanks, Evan! Good to see you around again! :D

James, it's good that they worked for you. Sometimes it can be tricky to slot new or strange instruments into an orchestral setting and keep them sounding like they belong there. I like to think of it as camouflaging them....so none of the clarinets notice the strange new guy beside them playing a Shakuhachi :P

Now, THIS is awesome. As you said, it slightly echoes Williams, but gets a whole new direction.

Great sampling also, Hollywoodwinds never ceases to amaze me.

Keep up the good work!

Freaking amazing as usual Marius. Very well done! Keep up the great work!
