Invitation to score a 3D Animation Film

Featured Replies

Referred above it's my website where u can watch the 3D animation short film i have recently scored.

It was a great collaboration and also a great opportunity to make a score in a mood i that i had not tried before (Fantasy).

As usual i dont know the key signatures or chords but I hope enjoy it! lolol

P.S. - i have also uploaded here the piece on its own (since the film one had to suffer some changes to match with the final cut of the scenes). Therefore this version is a few seconds longer than the one in the actual movie :)

Cool score, Gonzalo!

I must say, your topic title had me feeling that you were inviting us to score a 3D Animation Film. But alas!

Great music. Nice instrumentation. Samples sounded pretty realistic. Mixing sounded pretty good. And you fit the video quite nicely. The soaring bird at the beginning with all the sweeps and flourishes in the music; that was nice. Towards the end where the girl anchors her flying whale to his flying ship; that moved me on an emotional level.

Nice animation too! That must have been a very fun collaboration. What libraries and programs did you use to compose this?

Hi

thank for your share

that's great with many music producer

I like "love- amor"

I want also to listen Hip Hop and R&B

Cheers

WOW DUDE! Very Nice! I Luv Film Music :D

Which samples/programs did u use?

awesome stuff, looks and sounds top notch, the project is abit cheesy but the whale thing is definitely a nice touch.

good work on the sounds you know your stuff, very professional, i can add some comments but i think its all a matter of taste.

This is fantastic. Not only does it fit to the picture, but the music also stands alone.

To repeat a previous question, what Library did you use?

Hello guys!

thank you very much for all the complements!!!

before i actually start replying i just would like to say HOW NICE THIS FORUM IS!!

i have posted some stuff in other forums for composers and they PROPER HATED ME just because we are composers for media, because we use samples and (at least in my case) because i dont know music theory. THEY REALLY SUCKKK!! and the atmosphere in this forum is actually great!! and everybody is just so constructive in their analysis!! :D:D

good work for the forum mate (whoever the owner is lololol)

well about the samples, i mainly use EastWest Gold and Gold XP. besides this i also use some percussion kits from other libraries like stormdrum or project sam true strike :).

but this comes into the discussion i have discussed in the other posts of mine. i guess that making stuff to sound real is not really related with the samples we use (well it is until a certain extend) but it is mainly related with the quality with the mix :)

thank you mate! i also agree that the story of the animation is nothing amazing... however i think that the quality of the animation is very good... but this is obviously subjective :P

I love the 3D film. What the film did U watch

wow yeah, the animator and texturers are incredible, lovely landscapes-they would definitely get gigs from that film-you should as well!

Wow that's really sweet ;)

I love your playful percussion and woodwinds. The strings sound so realistic, you really did a great job on the mixing!

The only thing I would probably do differently is the part where the bird suddenly appears. I'd use some slow string or something swelling very slightly and than lead to your suprise effect; the way you did it seems a little too "hard" to me.

The scene where the boy's landing sounds cool ;)

On the whole, I'd like to have heard a bit more intensity, more dynamic changes and stuff like that to support the emotions more deeply...

But then, you'r good mix makes up for this, so the whole piece sounds really very beautiful!

Thanks a lot for sharing!

The story on the film is nothing special really... but the animation and the music! I think the music complemented the film well and that's one of the main things that it should do when composing for films etc so well done.

What software did you use to get those sounds, any particular sample sets?

Heya mate,

well as i said in the previous page of this post as well as in previous posts i have been posting here, i use EastWest Gold and Gold XP.

the reason why it is sounding real is because whilst the composition stage takes me 1 or two days to compose, the mixing stage takes me about 10 days to make it to sound reliable :P

in fact the engineering process is harder then the composition itself lololol but it is something that i really enjoy doing (the instrument emulation) :)

it doesnt really matter what VSTs you are using as long as u mix them properly :P

this is great! very professional! hopefully soon we'll hear ur compositions on major hollywood films

heya mate!

yeah i guess you are right about the scene when the bird pops up but unfortunately that wasn't my choice... if u notice when the soundtrack approaches that section it starts fading out. i didnt want it like that, but the director did. :(

therefore i had to simply turn it down so that the foley could get more noticable.

but thank you once again for the constructive feedback mate :)

gonzalos mate, if you can open a thread about it in advice & techniques, or maybe even start a tutorial for mixing, naturally if its not a secret thing, which i very much respect!

most of us here at game & films are total noobs, and even though we know EQ, compressor, panning etc i'm pretty sure we're doing them in a bad way.

well, of course, when you'll have the time, and at your own leisure, we here will be VERY grateful!

cheers!

Hello The J,

I hope you dont get offended with the fact that i'm not gonna do it because yeah, you are right... it is some kind of a secret looooool.

It is not one but a couple of techniques that i have been developing accross the years.

Although i just make this kind of music for an year, i have been developing these techniques since the time that i mainly used to produce hip-hop and Rnb (for the last 4 years until now :P) and i have pretty much applied that knowledge onto this genre :P

but i can just tell you that developing these skills are as important and unique as learning how to compose. not only for the composition side of it but i do believe that the way u sound (not just in terms of composition but in terms of mix) can also contribute a lot for the development of your own voice :P ... but that is just my opinion :S

Very well done. The cues fit the film nicely and add to the visuals well while staying out of the way. Well sequenced, and fairly well mixed, though some places lack a clarity and presence due to the samples and an overuse of reverb. If you weren't using full mic'd samples, I would suggest to try bussing instrument sections to different tracks and applying individual reverbs to each.

To really take your mock ups to the next level, I would suggest also making the investment in higher quality sample libraries than EWQL. EWQL is a great base library, but it would be in your interest to have a few others at your disposal as well so that you can really start layering and working with samples. You've got the chops, so the investment wouldn't be wasted.

Hello mate,

Thanks for the feedback!

but yeah, i actually did some of the things you said, specially the different reverbs and i have also created some reverb impulses for some groups of instruments.

About EWQL, well i mostly use Gold and Gold XP but that doesnt mean that i dont use other VST libraries such as Stormdrum, true strike, omnisphere etc... however this soundtrack was entirely made using Gold and Gold XP :)

i really would like to invite all of you to visit some more of my soundtracks under Music (on my website).

there you can listen to me working with some other libraries and "Cheeky" (the humoresque piece) was entirely made using the built-in Reason Refills to prove the importance of the mix in making stuff to sound real :) (or at least as real as i can make :S)

i really would like to know what u guys think of it and particularly you Andrew Skrabutenas, since you seem to have a lot of experience in this fiel already :P

thank you everyone :)

Gonzalo

Hmm, well if that's the case, I would maybe rework your reverb settings. Things are getting a little muddied and unclear.

What I meant by the other libraries bit is that you should get more orchestral libraries to supplement EWQLSO, i.e. (LASS, bits of Vienna, Symphobia, Sample Modeling, etc.) Like I said, EWQL is a good library, but it can't get the job done all on its own. Listen to some of Marius's and my stuff, we layer and mix multiple libraries to help overcome limitations inherent in EWQL.

Keep in mind that because it's evident that you know what you're doing, I'm holding you to a higher standard than many others on here. I'm just using what I know and have experienced working in LA to try to help you progress from where you are now.

nah mate dont worries!

thank you very much for your advices! i will defenetely keep your advices in mind next time i'll make another piece!

about the other libraries, well i also have LA scoring strings, Symphobia etc... but i can rarely use them cos my PC cant handle that and at the moment i'm too broke to buy another computer loooooool

but thnks for the advices :P
