Bouree in D major

Short Bouree I made for my class assignment.

Got a mediocre mark but I personally think it`s a (generically) silly & cute piece.

First of all what you have here is not a piece. It is a theme or two, a starting point. I really like what is here, there just isn't enough of it.

And, from my knowledge, a bourree is usually written in 2/2 or 2/4. You seem to have the right anacrusis and rhythm, which is, also from my brief research, part of what makes a bourree a bourree.

When writing dances, I often find it immensely helpful to see how a dance of this sort is danced. Even if the music was not written specifically for a dance, in the Baroque the style stayed the same. There are often certain rhythms and accented beats that define what kind of dance it is.

Great job! I'd love to hear this expanded!

You're right, I basically wrote it on a whim after hearing one or two bourees. :S

No, a Bouree can be written in either 2/4, cut time, or 4/4 - as long as the rhythmic component is generally followed. I thought this was a very nice piece actually - very simple and generic. Why did it receive a mediocre mark? What were your professors comments?

It is only 20 seconds long, so I can see why your professor would give it mediocre marks...I too would like to see where you go with it if you decide to expand it some day.

Thanks for the comments. Especially, the analysis, John. I`ll use that to edit the piece. :) Also. The last bar is 3-4 only because of my failure at notation program. I wanted it to be 3 beats without the rest at the end.

The piece is shorter only because he only required 16, or however many bars. It was mainly a test to see if we can conjure a bouree in a short period of time. General comments from my prof were basically what John said, little awkward harmonic phrasing and such.

why cant you just keep the 4/4 at the end..and make the 3rd note a whole note, and the f# in the treble a whole note
