When exactly is it being released?

I gave the website for a reason.

Wow. This really sucks. I just bought Finale 2006. Part of it was because these programs arent backwards compatable. Do they really expect us to upgrade every year? The program looks awesome though...... :)

Uh... yep.

Uh... yep

I'm excited. I dont have the money for it and i don't think it would be much use to me but it still seems cool as hell :)

From what I've seen not much looks too new and exciting...GPO is what did it for me on 06, and now that I have that, there's not much to gain from upgrading, IMHO.

No, I'm serious. I couldn't find where it said the release date was.

As far as I've heard and as far as I've been able to find out, the exact date hasn't yet been released though I don't know if thats true.

Though theres a rumor about mid August... the 14th? (don't kill me :) )

Woot, can't wait. The features are really cool, and worth the update because I use those a lot.

I really can't understand you guys, slaves to technology rushed out under this gold-rush mentality. Finale's been on the go for several years and if they knew enough about music to justify doing it at all they could have got it right first go.

You got some really sharp practicers there all right!

They know how to get you hooked and dependent.

And there they sit on their bums saying "Of course we'll meet the deadline, we just won't test it - let the sucker users do that - we'll soon find out what doesn't work from their emails."

"But they're composers! Won't they get held up waiting to us to get it right?"

"Hah! Sod composers, let's worry about the money! And while you're at it, downgrade a couple of components so we can re-upgrade them next year. You know what they're like, they go glaze-eyed!"

Sorry, a non-starter with me. Finale 2006 can't put my latest scores together so why should I chance 2007?

en tout cas, vieux bolleaux!

;)

Finale may have bugs, but I don't exactly have an entire orchestra sitting in my room waiting to play whatever I write down. I like the ability to write music and scan it in, I like to hear it with realistic sound, and because I'm constantly changing things, I love the flexability. Besides, if you can't live with the 'rush the software out the door' mentality, you wont' be using any technology for long. That's the mentality of the industry now. People wants things and they want them NOW!

The more you allow them to manage your expectations down, the more they will and get away with it (a very familiar concept in the business environment in which I work).

My, oh my, does finale give you that?

Cwahhh!

Not an attitude I subscribe to, hence avoiding dependence on technology wherever possible. I hate parting with my cash on a dependence thing especially when, all it does, is make a simple thing complicated.

Good grief, they'll be offering programs that compose FOR you next and kidding you it's your work! And just beyond that....they're working on a microphone that actually does the listening for you... Suddenly...you're redundant.

No, seriously, it's no use to me as it can't represent what I want to write, how I want to write it.

;)

Heard of Garritan Personal Orchestra? Damn realistic.

Now, unless you personally are the majority of people buying software, there's nothing you can do to change the trend. You're not the majority. The majority will buy buggy, rushed software, and the industry caters to the people that give them the most money. It's "a very familiar concept in the business environment in which I work"

And, ever heard of auto-harmonize and auto-orchestrate? Both plug-ins for finale. Useful for people who can't harmonize (although why they'd bother is beyond me).

The feature I'm most excited about is linked parts and exploding divisi into multiple parts from 'extract part'. I like to write in condesned scoring when I can, but being able to generate pull parts is nice.

Nope, not again! I've jumped off this bandwagon! ;)

I like my Finale '04... yeah, I'm old school, lol.

I'm too lazy to find an upgrade... and I personally don't know if I want to spend the money to buy '06. I have a limited amount of money, and I spend that on my instruments.

I prefer Sibelius anyhow, but I do respect the fact that they only put out new versions when they actually have a good deal of things to update, not just every year because people will keep buying it...which greatly echoes the point that montpellier was making...

Finale 2006 just came out!!! What the hell. I really would not buy a new version, even for a lower upgrade price, after less than a year than the previous version. To me, 2005 really did not seem all that different from 06 anyway. What can they do that Sibelius hasn't already done, anyway? And by that, I mean what can they do that is actually useful and easy to use that Sibelius hasn't already??

Don't waste your money, people. Wait 'til 08, it'll seem like more of an improvement.

I cannot possibly upgrade every year. Do you guys really get the new version everytime it comes out? I cannot afford to pay that much money. I am still stuck on the 2004 version which kinda sucks because I cannot open up new files past my version. I think that I might upgrade to 2007 this time, but I have to at least wait the three years. I cannot believe so many of you have 2006 already. It seems like I just my 2006 brochure in the mail yesterday. :) I am really thinking of it because of the GPO. I would love to hear my music played back like that. I think that it would give a composer more inspiration. Anyways, thanks Marius for the info and the link.

The upgrade from Finale 05 to 06 is a big one. GPO is worth it, IMO. I got finale 06 for free, so I didn't pay for the upgrade, so I can afford to buy 07 as well. Finale 07 includes a lot more GPO sounds/articulations.

I upgrade about every 2-3 years. I thought I wanted 2006, but I decided to wait until they'd worked out some issues I'd heard about. Sounds like they have, and added a few other nice things. The exploding parts thing sounds especially tasty. I'll probably spring for this one...but not likely for another until 2009 or so. :)

Sibelius only issues upgrades about once every 2 years, but their upgrades cost close to double what a one year Finale upgrade costs. So it evens out. Going from Finale 2005 to 2007 (2 years) would definitely be a larger upgrade than going from Sibelius 3 to 4 (2 years).

Finale 2006 came out a full year ago. That's how Finale upgrades come - one year apart. 2006 is quite a lot different from 2005 as long as you're not using the pirated version.

There are many useful features in Finale that Sibelius does not have. Including Finale GPO is a big one (100 sounds, up to 64 simultaneous vs. 20 sounds in Kontakt Silver and only 8 that can be used at one time). Finale has better (and more) music entry systems that can greatly speed up the process. Native Instruments VST support and now the ability for Human Playback to be customized for sample libraries like EWQLSO, VSL, etc. The ability to resolve collisions vertically between staves. Easier setup of repeats. Intelligent finding of rhythmic patterns for copying slurs, articulations, etc. A scroll view for composing in (which is very convenient for working with scores). Slurs that automatically adjust to avoid colliding with notes.

Sibelius is a great program, but don't think for a second that Finale doesn't have useful features that Sibelius lacks. Sibelius also has useful features that Finale doesn't.

The competition between Finale and Sibelius is the best thing that the notation business has. The two companies are pushed to make a better product. I personally use Finale, but I am very thankful for the existence of Sibelius because it has inspired Finale to get better also.

Well, I guess users of one versus the other will notice the changes in versions much more so than just someone who tries out both programs.

Besides, almost all of the features you listed that were new with Finale have to do with playback! Am I the only one who is fine with MIDI? I tend to actually get my pieces performed, so I don't really need Garrittan's samples anyway...

I guess each program has different things to suit different people. I guess Sibelius just suits me better. Plus, I felt there were a great deal of changes between 2 and 3, and especially between 3 and 4.
