3 Preludes

Featured Replies

Not sure if these are even preludes. Not an experienced composer but please do leave feedback as would like to improve.

In the Baroque period a prelude was an introduction to something (Prelude and Fugue....).

In the Romantic era, the prelude became a standalone piece, often short,  rhythmic, and "improvisatory".

I think your pieces fit in that concept. The three are nice. You stay in a tonal (safe) background, I mean to say with no further explorations. On the other hand I think the counterpoint is consistent.

Oh I see. Thanks for the information on preludes and what they are. I'll try and make my pieces more exploratory in the future. Thanks very much for the feedback.

I love your pieces YESSSSS!!!!!!!! The only thing I could change in Prelude in D major is to finish out measure 14. The third one kind-of seems like an excursive rather than a prelude, but ALL of them defiantly fit the prelude "mold"

Youngc thanks for the feedback. Do you mean measure 14 sounds too empty? Also, what do you mean by excursive? Again, thanks for taking the time to listen to the pieces and for the feedback.

Sorry exercise not excursive.

And measure 14 sounds like an abrupt stop.

Oh right I know what you mean. Thanks for the advice I'll try and address those areas for improvement.

Thank you for sharing your three preludes, which have really nice ideas and have a generally good flow.

Some comments:

Prelude in e minor: The time signature change in measure 2 feels a bit forced as it does not add really to the musical structure. I would just shorten the measure. Measure 2 then rhymes very well with measure 4. Same goes for the repetition of this part at the end. The block chords feel really thick. Probably you could thin the texture a bit.

Prelude in D Major: The open end on the first inversion chord is charming, however, it could be staged more effectively, e.g. by slowly petering out. Or you follow @Youngc and add a proper cadence.

Prelude in c# minor: You use the inherent chromaticism quite nicely. Just an idea: You could change the last f# into a double sharp for a provisional leading tone to the dominant, but this is just an idea.

Wow.. that E minor Prelude.. gave me goosebumps. Thank you for the motivation I needed to get off my butt today and write !

P.S. The other two are awesome as well.. keep it up, man!
