post count??

Recommended Posts

While the old software did make use of pip "ranks" that increased in tandem with the user's post count, I think we can all agree that it takes more than x number of posts to gain status or high standing. I've already explained why the measure was implemented, and the concept of quality control has also been touched on, but I feel you are reading into this a little too much, montpellier. Sure, the post count isn't a pure and literal post count anymore, but neither is the member number particularly meaningful for some members. Neither is the join date, if you take into account time zone discrepancies. We've just changed something slightly to adapt to the environment; the rest of YC is exactly as it was before.

Oh and by the way, the post count is only incremented when an actual new message is submitted, not when an edit is made.

Yes, sorry, this is a business trait with me. Just that if something isn't functional regards formal or informal objectives why do it at all? (A rhetorical question in this case). I have a fairly cynical view of the programming trade, often seeing arbitrary change just to keep the progs busy.

cheers.

Hey, I was more specific than that. I said that compared to me you're still a n00b :P

Anyways, If the

box doesn't count towards your 100 chars, does the same thing apply to the
 box?

Is there a way to inclue a word count tool into the advanced reply menu?

Should I just stfu?

:D ...

Well then I'll just have to be here a bit longer...

or there is another possibilty :P

Oh and btw Mike, I just wondered. If you post something less than 100 letters and then you notice that you wrote something wrong or forgot to add something. So you re-write that post and this time more than 100 letters, will the post count rise?

Well, that's a rather simplistic and cynical view of programming you presented there. I certainly don't go around changing things just to "keep myself busy", for what it's worth. We do have a primary objective, by the way: to stop people spamming in an attempt to raise their post count. I've said that about three times now.

Anyway, now that the editing-related "loophole" has been raised, I may look into it. However, it may be that vBulletin's internal structure all but prevents what you are suggesting taking place (based on my present understanding).

That seems ok...but maybe a bit excessive? I mean, not all of my posts require 350 characters to say what I want to say, but does that mean my post isn't worth adding to my personal statistic? I mean, it's not like I have some need to raise my post count, but I am interested in the number of posts I've made just like I've checked the number of hits to my web sites and their origin - curiosity, etc.

I mean, I think one can make a contributing post in under 350 words - people who are looking to simply raise their post count for whatever reason will just be really verbose about saying nothing. I prefer the more in fewer words approach.

I'm just confused about why this is necessary.

Simple, ban and delete. Old fashion but works.

Ah, when we say "spamming" we mean people posting very short, pointless messages with the primary objective being raising their post count, not people coming among with the sole purpose of advertising something. We thought perhaps introducing this little system would help discourage such behaviour. Instead, it seems to have caused a whole host of other problems/conflicts.

The only person I can say that's been doing that is Sapphire. No one else, at least that I've seen, has admitted to it, so you can't be sure it's a problem.
