  1. In the last days I was working on this little elegy for piano. I call it My Lament. It starts rather sad, has some eruptions in the middle but resolves peacefully towards the end. http://www.gerdprengel.de/my_lament.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/my_lament.pdf Gerd
  2. This work wants to paint the rising of the sun, the sun beaming through the clouds and mirroring in a mountains brook, it's merciles power in the desert, it's life giving power and it's sunset at the end of a day. Just as well it may describe the rise, splendour & passing of a man . . . one of my favourite works . . . http://gerdprengel.de/the_sun.mp3 Gerd
  3. Thank you, Belasek and caters, for your helpful hints! I will revise my piece accordingly! You wrote " I would rewrite it so that it will be played on G-string" - What do you mean by that? How can I do that? I thought the player automatically know best what string to use ...
  4. Hi, I'd like to present to you the 1st mov. of my violin sonata in e-minor. www.gerdprengel.de/violinsonata-1.mp3 www.gerdprengel.de/violinsonata-1.pdf (score) I would appreciate very much your impressions ... thank you! Gerd
  5. Wow, a great work! But I can't fully enjoy it because of the soundquality of the instrument. Could you please present it also with a piano ? Gerd
  6. A few years ago a short sketch for a Bagatelle from 1826 was identified among Beethoven's sketches for his last stringquartett. On this beautiful melancholic theme with an harmonically interesting bassline I wrote 8 variations for piano. Besides bars 9-12 the first 16 bars are from Beethoven. What do you think ...? http://gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.mp3 http://gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.pdf Gerd
  7. (sorry, I presented this in the wrong board - I added it also now in the piano board) Hi, a few years ago a short sketch for a Bagatelle from 1826 was identified among Beethoven's sketches. On this beautiful melancholic theme with an harmonically interesting bassline I wrote 8 variations for piano. Besides bars 9-12 the first 16 bars are from Beethoven (another set of variations for string quartett on a sketch from this time I presented a few weeks ago). What do you think ...? Is it playable? Thank you ... http://gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.mp3 http://gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.pdf Gerd
  8. What a delightful piece! Very melodious and nice instrumentation! What tool did you you use for the strings sounds? Gerd
  9. Absolute beauty regarding melody and voice leading, especially in the slow movement! Thank you, Markus! Gerd
  10. I found a very beautiful Adagio melody sketch found among Beethoven's sketches for his quartett op. 130 . I liked this theme so much that in April I wrote a variation movement for string quartett on this. It starts with the naked theme, then it is repeated with an added bass line and a second part from me, then 7 variations follow: http://www.gerdprengel.de/Beeth_quartett_sketch_1825_variations.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/Beeth_quartett_sketch_1825_variations.pdf I hope it will speak to you ... and I am open for any suggestions for improvement ... Gerd
  11. Dear Theodore, I am amazed about the beauty of your great quartett! I absolutely love it - both regarding the composition and the superb performance! I am so glad that today people like you are still writing such great music in the style of the Romantic. Do you have a score to present? Gerd
  12. The second movement is based on these sketches: www.gerdprengel.de/Mendelssohn_unfinished_symphony_Andante_sketch.pdf By now I shortened the Andante in the middle part, origninally it was too long. It has now this Structure: 0:00 Andante cantabile main part, melody and bass line sketch by Mendelssohn 2:55 Andante con moto 4:59 3 variations on the main theme 7:11 Reprise 10:00 Coda, final variation of main theme see the links in top of the thread ... I am curious about your impressions ... what would you have done with the Andante sketches? Gerd
  13. Thank you, this is very helpful!!!! I will correct it!! Would you please also take a look at my Mendelssohn symphony project a few threads further down? For me this is even more important than the Mozart... Regards Gerd
  14. For both practicing orchestration and just for fun I made this attempt to orchestrate my favourite piano sonata by Mozart which, I think, is well suited for a symphonic setting: http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mozart_PianoSonata-KV457-1_orch.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mozart_PianoSonata-KV457-1_orch.pdf (score) http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mozart_PianoSonata-KV457-2_orch.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mozart_PianoSonata-KV457-3_orch.mp3 Gerd
  15. Last year I made the most interesting discovery that in the month his violin concerto had it's first performance (March/April 1845) Mendelssohn was working on a 6th symphony in C-Major! For the 1st mov. he wrote the first about 80 bars in full score and some sketches for the 2nd theme and the development. This fascinated me so much that I tried to make a full movement of it. I finally could also get the sketches for a second movement from a library in Oxford and made it to complete also this to a whole Andante movement of about 14 minutes. The first 2:50 minutes are based on a full melody sketch with various hints to the accompaniement by Mendelssohn. After orchestrating this I continued with a new middle part with various themes with each increasing in strength and coming to a dramatic climax with an appassionate fugato. After this various variations of Mendelssohn's beautiful Andante theme follow until a recapitulation of the beginning and a most tender final variation. I.Allegro http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mendelssohn_unfinished_symphony1.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/Symphony_in_C_Allegro.pdf II. Andante cantabile http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mendelssohn_unfinished_symphony_Andante.mp3 http://www.gerdprengel.de/Mendelssohn_unfinished_symphony_Andante.pdf It would help me to get your impressions ... Thank you Regards, Gerd
  16. Hi, I'd like to present to you a very meditative Adagio in g minor for a stringquartett on the famous 4-note pattern B-A-C-H. The atmosphere at first is of deep sadness and pain. A contrasting second theme in Eb Major, a kind of choral, rises up from this like a solemn prayer conveying the love of God. www.gerdprengel.de/b-a-c-h.pdf (score) www.gerdprengel.de/b-a-c-h.mp3 I hope it speaks to you ... Gerd
  17. Hey, this is wonderful!! What exactly is the Andante theme you wrote the variations on? Usually the theme is presented first, so that one knows what you variate. Is it possible to view the score? Gerd
  18. I should mentioned that measures 9-12 in the theme presentation are not by Beethoven but added by me, also the left hand of measures 5-8.
  19. No, unfortuneatelly I am not a pianist. I did not primarilly wanted to write in the style of Beethoven, but because no piano music I love and adore as the music from Beethoven and Schubert a glimpse of the style of these two certainly may shine through these variations. Gerd
  20. Variations on a late Beethoven Bagatelle sketch Recently a short sketch for a Bagatelle from 1826 was identified among Beethoven's sketches. On this beautiful melancholic piece I enlarged a bit the second theme and wrote 7 variations for piano elaborating the melody itself as also the bass line: Theme Andante - Allegretto - Moderato - Allegro - Allegro agitato - Canzonetta cantabile - Lento - Allegro ma non troppo (Fugato). You may read it and listen to it at: www.gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.pdf www.gerdprengel.de/var_bagatelle.mp3 What do you think of this? Regards Gerd
  21. Since my youth I was fascinated of the thought that Beethoven had left sketches for a tenth symphony. In the 1980s Barry Cooper made an attempt to write a first movement on the base of the corresponding sketches. And I did this with the second movement (Andante cantabile, Ab-Major) and the the Scherzo. Here I present to you the Andante (the Scherzo will follow) Symphony II. Andante cantabile (mp3) Beethoven's sketched theme is found in measure 2 - 4 of my score. Basicly this movement consists of a number of free variations on Beethoven's theme. The highlight for me is the kind of transcendent variation at about 6:20 . I hope you will like it... Gerd Finale 2008a - [Symphony-2.pdf
