the ever elusive Java Music Chat

Featured Replies

im sure im not the only member who remebers the rather unsucessful attempt to introduce a Java Chat room. well earlier today (actually, late yesterday) i clicked a few links and ended up on a page with a tab that let me into the Chatroom. That proves that it continues to exist within the bowels of YC but it is next to impossible to find.

anyone have a map or directions on how to get there?

Is there some secret route?

maybe this time it would actually catch on now that members are used to using the shoutbox and actually talking to eachother in real time.

okay figures id find it after i start a new topic :D

for those of you who are interested, to get to the Java Music Chat, follow these simple steps

1. go to the YC home page

2. Click on the YC Archive link (on the left)

3. Log in (duh...)

4. Click the Chat Tab

5. Well... if you cant figure it out from here, keep out :P

anyways, i hope it catches on and that people actually ente because it could be fun...

do the same rules apply to the Music Chat as to the Shoutbox?

That's where the old chatroom used to be on the old site. You all do know that the Archive is basically the old site set in stone as it were, I presume. We used much more primitive (and somewhat less buggy) software, though.

Ha, you found the old java chat! I took out the links on purpose, but I forgot I kept the link to the old chat still on the archive page. The shoutbox replaces the java chat pretty much. The new forum software, coming soon, will have a realtime shoutbox. So sit tight! When the site gets big enough, I will have a chatroom instead of a shoutbox, this way, we don't have to worry about bad behavior on the main page of the site!! That is my plan.

So...? :musicwhistle:

*still misses Java chat*

What's wrong with the shoutbox?

  • Author

Can't have private conversations, no sound effects (those were so cool...), the rest of the world can read it so we often end up scaring off normal, sensible people, no easy way to save the conversations....

Hmm, touch

The link still works. :P

So it does... I'll leave it alone for now. :P

We're looking into a Flash-based solution, though, as Flash is rather like Java's non-decrepit, sprightly grandson. Preferably something that integrates with vB, too.

So we have a chat room?

Last time I checked, chopin was in the process of purchasing one. :)

Flash? Flash is teh roXor, especially Flash 8. Wish I had Flash beyond MX 2004.

*Yes, this is my attempt at 7337 speak. However, I don't spell poorly enough to pull it off :)*

For those of you who haven't yet cottoned on, we've just added a Flash-based chat. Unlikely the clunky old Java version, it'll recognise your username automatically.

yay!

Can we add a little line, sort of like Currently Active Users, over the statistics bar that will show us who's using flashchat?

Assuming I've understood you correctly, we already have one.

Look for "Users currently in Chat" below the online list.

Eh? I don't see anything like that..

EDIT: It works when i'm viewing the board as a guest, but not when i'm logged in

That is most odd...I'll investigate.

OK, should be fixed now.

Is a log kept of all the chats?

Like, if a situation such as harassment or something creative like that were to come up, can the admins read back on everything that's happened?

That would be scary...

Then again, Mike can access your PMs too.

  • Author

he *can*

But I doubt he does.

They probably have better things to do than to spy on us well behaved members

Chats are not logged, no.

I wish to clarify the issue of "Mike being able to access PMs", since there does seem to be some misconception floating about. Yes, since I have direct access to the forum's database, I am able to call up any piece of information being held within it. Same goes for chopin. However, we certainly do not make a habit of looking through private messages - quite the opposite, in fact. Other users' PMs are only ever looked up under exceptional circumstances. The procedure you have to go through to find the data is also quite fiddly - don't get an image into your head of a "View User's PMs" button.

Similarly, we take two key pieces of private information from all members: their IP address(es) and their email. Going by much the same logic, you should also be fearful of us hunting you down or having your address sold to spammers. You just need to trust that we will not misuse this data. And we don't.

In summation, private messages are called private for a reason. There's really no need for paranoia. :)

Is the the possibility of adding a spell checker or something like Firefox 2.0 uses for those of us who are linguistically challenged? ;)
