aMusicComposer
I have composed a melody and put it into a waltz. Now I think that it would work really well in the bassoon as part of a concerto. Should I use the same melody twice?
Maarten Bauer
If it is a good melody and it works for such a big ensemble: yes. Mozart himself even re-used many of his melodies. I played the 12 horn duets with a friend of mine and all these melodies are lovely. A month later I listened to Die Zauberflöte for the first time, one melody of an aria (unfortunately I do not know which aria) sounded very familiar to me, but I did not know why. After a few minutes I discovered that it was exactly the same melody as in one of the Duets.
Kimoworld
This is really a strange question. Why do you want to know our opinion about this ? It is your music, not our music. As long as you don´t intend to hurt anyone with it, you can do as you please. You are really the only one, who can answer this question properly. In my opinion, this question is not strange at all. You state, in other words, that everything you write down can be music. You can do whatever you want to do, which is true. However, @aMusicComposer asks for advice or at least for our opinions, so I give him mine. Sharing the melody in a (audio) file would clarify the question. Kimoworld
Hi Maarten >However, @aMusicComposer asks for advice or at least for our opinions, so I give him mine. >Sharing the melody in a (audio) file would clarify the question. You are right. It is a good thing to hear other people´s view on things. However the question :"Should I use the same melody twice?" if taken literal strike me as absurd. That is really not for me or someone else to decide. If the question is to be taken literal, it is really a strange question. I don´t really think we disagree here. :-) Kim
bkho
Most composers have recycled themes. Schubert in particularly did it all the time. If it was okay with him, probably okay for anyone else.
aMusicComposer
This is the melody as it appears in the Waltz in F (No. 2 of Six Waltzes). Sorry, the audio isn't very good quality.
aMusicComposer
Ignore that. The audio isn't uploading....
