Exactly, I'm wondering whether the proposed IM will make it redundant, although the shoutbox seems to do a pretty good job of that itself.

I may be missing something, but why only open the Chat at certain times of the day?

You seem to have misunderstood a misunderstanding between Mike and myself, read the previous page for details.

The chatroom will likely remain the same after we introduce the "networking thingmebob".

Anyone happen to have any ideas as to how use of it could be encouraged? (Either now or later on. And by "it", I do of course mean the chatroom)

Perhaps moving it up? The space for it is all the way at the bottom, It would get more traffic perhaps and more people will see it if it's moved up. What about right under the shotbox? And make it big and bold so that no one can miss it.

If it was moved to the top of the page, it would get in the way. The shoutbox, being located at the top of the index, page, almost completely obscures the first actual forum (this very one, as it happens) on some resolutions, so adding anything more in that location would not be a good idea, in my view.

But to get to the chat room, if you don't use the tab for it, it's all of the way down at the bottom. So you can't see who else is in there if anyone, unless you scroll all of the wat down.

On second thoughts, I may create an unobstrusive "users in chat" list of my own, when I get the chance. It could be displayed just below the shoutbox, on a single line (truncated if necessary), and only if the chat isn't empty.

I get this message every time I try to access the chat room

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?

2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

You could do a few things:

1) Allow mp3 transfers through the chatroom

2) Disable shoutbox indefinitely until the chatroom gets more traffic

3) Create a POP-UP CHATROOM!!!!!OMFGKTHNKSBAIROFLTTYLCTNBRBLOLBBQ :D

I think that may be a little drastic but maybe something that links the conversations going on in the shoutbox to the main chat room?

I can't express what I think the purpose of that would be but I do have a reason :D

If people would like to chat, and the amount of time they can use the shoutbox is limited, they would naturally search for an alternative.

Weak reasoning, I admit, but it's plausible to a certain degree.

What we need is a group of people that will idle in the chat for hours on end and make conversation when they see a message. I would be willing to do this since I use my pc off and on from about 10AM-3PM on this site's time. Anyone else volunteer?

If you want the chatroom to be used over the shoutbox, you can do one (or both) of two things-

1) Get rid of the shoutbox

2) Advertise it! It loks so lonely at the bottom of the screen, and the shoutbox is readily available AT THE TOP. So, people want to use the shoutbox more!
