  1. I have an unfair advantage by having perfect pitch, so whenever I'm humming something random and it hits me like, "that would be an amazing motif", I go ahead and write it down, note for note. Ken's method is, from what I've seen, pretty common, and it works! It's reliable, and serial muscle memory keeps those motifs in your hands for a little bit. As for how it sounds... unless it's incidental music that will only be virtually realized, I've been taught to always write with the players in mind, as a super high priority. Unless it's an aleatoric piece, I tend to write using technological notation right away. It just keeps it in one area, which is nice.

  2. Aw, these are adorable! I don't really want to put review criticism on this one, because whenever I write "children's" pieces, they always end up either atonal or polytonal... i guess I just don't like the simplistic texture of those kinds of music. I can tell that's not at all what you were going for. Good work; I hope she likes them.

  3. Are those tempo jump places actually in those tempos? Or is it rubato. Those two places are very very difficult for violinists to play accurately, especially with the infrequent jumps. Also might want to add slurs to your main rhythm, since some people will instinctively make one more bow than the other. Idea-wise, it's really cool! Sorry it couldn't make the time limit.

  4. Very nice piece! This hidden meaning, once explained it's a plus. Everytime I listen to one of your soliloquies I find a crossroad in front of me: on one hand I think their simpli great, as hyperconcentrated ideas; on the other hand I think they could be the start point of something bigger. But they're your creation.

  5. It's a nice collection. I remember some years ago I had to write something for "children". Difficult. It's not the same something children can sing than something they can listen to. Besides, if you put some emotional part in it, it's different. This is the way I see what you have done here. The piece I see more "adult" is the waltz. But they all are fine.
