Favorite simplistic yet elegant composition?
Mark replied to Gamma's topic in Composers' Headquarters
For simplicity (or at least the appearance of) and elegance it's difficult not to think of Grieg for me. Many of the Lyric Pieces come into the category for me, particularly the Arietta from Op.12 (Number 1). Another composition that jumps to mind is Rhubarb from Selected Ambient Works vol II by Aphex Twin. Extract from Rhubarb, set to footage of bees -
Of the profiles I'd nominate James's, and for articles 'Basic Sonata Theory'. That's right, I do still exist! I just have exams :( *hugs all*
-
Look up "My loving Life" by Nikolas Sideris in the chamber music forum. ;) (nothing to do with climaxes, the golden ratio is used in a completely different (and more interesting, in my opinion) way)

What the hell happened to the home page?

Yup. -
I'm still failing to see the difference between this and this, besides the ugly "Profile:" bit... *fears change*

What exactly is a namespace? I feel this is something I should know...

What the hell happened to the home page?

Still no joy. All of the previous versions view fine, and the only change between the last revision that works and the current was me updating the competitions. -

I don't have Firefox, though I have just updated to IE8. Could that be the issue? Neither Ctrl + F5 or clicking on the little button succeeded, I'm afraid. Bewildering. -
Reviewers needed! Apply here
Mark replied to Jen318tkd's topic in Announcements and Technical Problems
I second the nominations of Nico and Mael. Though Nico should be made to change his user title if he becomes a reviewer - it's morally wrong to have a default user title if it's going to be bold and awesome looking. -

Tried it, no change. -
What the hell happened to the home page?

Seems to be a localised problem. I can edit, it, and see it when I preview the changes, but when I click on home I'm just getting: -

Have I missed something? -
Can't believe I missed all the fun, was in Andersland, and I'm not sure if they have computers there. Screenshots, anyone?

Whooops, forgot to mention: If you want to listen to any of the pieces from the sets I suggested I recommend www.pianosociety.com, they have loads of public domain recordings of much of the reportoire. Enjoy ;)

You can try looking at some simple piano pieces, analysing the texture, how the chords are voiced, what the seperate hands are doing, then maybe try taking some of the pieces you've looked at as models for your own pieces (if for example you're looking at a Grieg piece that has the left hand playing arpeggios and the right hand a melody, use that same idea with your own melody and harmonies). After some time doing exercises like this and studying more of the piano literature you'll start to get a much better idea of what's possible on a piano and how to make best use of its versatility. Some recommendations (scores): Schumann's 'Album for the Young' Grieg's Op.12 Lyric Pieces (also check out his other sets of lyric pieces, there are several, all full of excellent piano writing and beautiful music) Chopin's Op.28 Preludes They should keep you going for a while ;). Also worth checking out are Mozart and Beethoven's piano sonatas, though I do recomemnd sticking to little miniatures for a while first. Good luck, and welcome to YC :)

Editors Needed - Promote Threads on YC Homepage
Mark replied to chopin's topic in Archives (June 2005 - November 2010)
Do you mean you want us to edit posts in normal YCdom to link to relevant wiki articles? If so there's a slight problem in that we only have moderating priveledges over the wiki forum :). I definitely like this idea though, should help increase wiki traffic and participation. -
gently caress! I hadn't realised you'd replied, scraggy. I was talking about for three horns, yeah. I really dig the way Miles write for three horns, and would defnitely like to have a closer look at that :)

But apart from that... "Your theses are scraggy!" :innocent:

Sorry I've been so inactive wikilerily, in a little while my unfairly massive school workload should've disappeared and I'll be able to start doing stuff again :) -

I think instead of more editors what we need are perhaps more people who're willing to write articles for the wiki. Did we not discuss an article writing competition a while ago? With a bit more organisation that could work. Prize = moar exposure, maybes? -
The fake social network idea's a brilliant one, I think. The screenshots could've been part of the joke, just to build it up. Anyone who's tested the beta could be let in on it and asked to keep quiet? I love the idea of claiming something as an april fool's joke, and the claim itself being the april fool. Elegant.
