String Quartet N

Featured Replies

God I HATE MIDI!!

Anyway... I'll post mp3's in Finale quality sound as soon as I can.

String Quartet N

lovely piece! , very conservative and has a country-like style that floats very smoothly under the strings of music theory.

I'm listening to the 1st mov. and enjoying it muchly.

I can't decide which part of it I like best... and I've listened to it several times through the "darker" part from about 2:27 to 3:06 (?) was kind of cool and a nice contrast

The first movement has a conservative first theme, bold but relaxed. However, modulation and a stronger, more constrasting development would help. Hints of Berlioz and Schubert are sweet. The lyrical second movement is close to flawless. I see a horse at rest, its owner singing a beauteous, flowing melody, then straddling the horse and galloping off, as the second motif says. The lively third movement dances with colour, the dorian flair in the middle mixing a Celtic root admist the spendour. Overall, I enjoyed your work pleasantly, and once you get rid of the terrible .mid, I shall download again.

Yeah, I know about the MIDI's...

I'll try to post mp3's with Finale quality (better than MIDI, but not quite real-sounding) later.

Thanks to you all for your comments until now! ^^

A score would be quite useful, though.

I have a certain reluctance on posting scores, for now... :sadtears:

I will if it is thoroughly necessary, which I don't think it is the case, now...

Hey, great piece of work, certainly deserves a place in the major work area. Lovely tunes, beautiful harmony coordinations. Wow, well done.

Ya, it SHOULD sound WAYY better in MP3.

the last movement is great fun and for once the MIDI actually captures the spirit of it. The other two movements though I really can't listen to until the .mp3's come along ( I should say as well that my MIDI soundset is particularly bad as only the motherboard soundcard and not my main one has GM support)

MAJOR UPDATE!!!

The MP3's are here!! ^^

I enjoyed the first movement, and the second I'm listening to right now. Sounds quite dark, but as I like songs in that way, well... yeah. The orchestration is quite professional, which's nothing you'll probably ever see from myself. >_>

Well, thank you, but it's not proffessional... I never had a composition lesson in my life...

Add word: "sounds/sounded"

MAJOR UPDATE!!!

The MP3's are here!! ^^

Go get them at http://www.box.net/public/hurna64xrm

Note: The pizzicato sound sounds orchestral (like a group of strings) because it didn't have the individual pizzicato sound in the soundbank... :happytears:

Hey great song I love the first movement, So I decided to take your midi and create a sampled version of it which sounds alot more realistic you can get here let me know if you want the other movements done

Thank you!

Unfortunately I don't like the sound of the file you sent... ;) Nevertheless, thanks a lot for showing interest!! :happytears:

Are u kidding? Afbla, those are great samples. What did you use?

  • Author

No I'm not kidding. I thought the sound was sort of muffled, "unreal", and I didn't hear some of the notes that I can hear in the usual Finale mp3's.

Finale's mp3's for strings sound like chicken getting raped... I like this one better.

You have a very nice theme, and it really is a bit conservative, but it's really nice nevertheless.

What I like most about the first movement is the transition to the minor part, and the whole minor part. It really is contrasting and very melancholic, and the transition back to the major is absolutely magnificent. I'd prefer a more strong and heroic ending, though, after the whole piece. Your ending just left me wanting more, see what I mean?

The second movement is absolutely stunning. I believe that right before the second time the theme plays, you should have a crescendo. The development of the theme is also very nice. The last part is very cool too (although I think you should do something different -harmonically- here, so it wouldn't get dull. Nice ending, suits the whole mood!

The third part sounds a bit cliche, like the beginning of the first one. Nice theme, though. Sounds like a folk dance or something. It is a bit long, and although I thought it would become a bit boring, it's just fine. Again, the ending is not that great. I mean, I expected something more.

If you need any help or ideas with endings, please feel free to ask me, because I've had tons of ideas for endings, but not for the rest of the pieces lol

So, very nice! I really liked this :D And you say you never had a lesson on composition in your life? that's pretty damn good :D

Take care!

Lovely! I'll admit I personally didn't like the 'cello introduction at the very beginning, but I loved the rest! The Violin part especially in the first movement!

My favourite was the third movement! I loved the pizzicato and then the introduction with the 'cello! It was a very fun sounding piece!

The fourth movement made use of some very good techniques too. Very well-done counterpoint, interesting bass, etc.

Very pleasing to listen to!

I thoroughly enjoyed the piece. I think it's evident that you have quite the imagination by using the bass as a percussion instrument in the first movement. I absloutely loved it the whole thing. Too bad you tricked me with that goddamned minor chord in the second one! And the same with the finale movement..I wanted that final chord to be an entire octave then it was lol, (I also would have to agree with what wayne said above..the solo cello introduction did sound a bit odd to me, but everything else seemed fine in that first movement) . Either way I must say that this is by far one of the most fun-to-listen to string quartets I have heard on the forum. The bass was an all too suspicious add and only made me more interested as to see how you would pull it off. Either way, you did a good job, congrats!

I listened to the first movement. There are definitely some great memorable moments in there. One thing I would be careful of, is slurring those violin parts so long. Violins can only go so long using the bow one way. You might wanna slur them less.

II movement has the same problems. Those slurs are to long. For a violin, sluring means a directional change in the bow. Usually only four notes in slower passages, and a few more in longer passages is the best idea. If you look at many composers that's about all they'll do, give or take a little.

In the third movement, You can notate those as grace notes, rather than 32nd notes. Also, the pizzicato with thirds and fifths, i'm not sure how easy those are to do. You might want to talk to a violinist about them.

I really like what I hear, it's very nice and cool. Congratulations.

Oh, this is in the major works sections. I'm not sure if I was supposed to make these comments, if I wasn't, feel free to delete the post.
