I suppose so. Are you thinking something like Carly Shearman's work? Or nature and and still life photographs?

The photograph I had used was of nature. Sorry, I am not familiar with Carly Shearman's work.

  • Very cool competition.  If I can find the right inspiration, I'd love to enter.  If not, I'd love to judge .

You don't have to use the Hartmann pictures. You can use any piece of visual art.

Write 6-to-8, you can't miss either way.

That sounds fine to me? I guess I would discourage you from creating a suite entirely comprised of nature photographs just because of the variation between movements, but if you have a way to keep it intriguing then go for it!

Thanks. I'll see if I can come up with something.

Another question: Can the instrumentation change  between one photograph and the next that I use?

Should I officially queue you up?
This is going to be treated as a concert work, so if your first movement is for 2 violins and you never use them again that may be looked at negatively, but tacet within reason is fine.

Not yet. I prefer to start something first. Then I will tell you.

I think you might be thinking of Cindy Sherman? There are many photographers who have raised picture taking to an art form. I can name many, but I don't want to influence the contestants.

Absolutely. Good luck!

I want to try but I feel so incompetent, haha. Time to look for art!

I'll add you in as a tentative entrant. Tell me if you're pulling out for whatever reason (though I hope you don't!).

This challenge is very interesting. Congrats! Many people in. Lots of work for the judges (or just one, so far).

Are you not entering? :( :(

Yes, I think I'll give it a try, in my style, let's see... I found (on the internet) a picture collection that is very inspiring (for me). Nice to resemble Rinsky-Korsakov!

  • 2 weeks later...

Please add me to the list.

I'm interested!

Marching band starts soon for me (got a new job!) and so I'll be running band camps starting in August, then school starts right after. What are the time commitments for being a judge?

Thanks!

Marching band always sounded like such a time sink to me... , I have to take that class in a year or so...
Anyway, for each candidate, you would determine the value the person got out of each respective scoring category, with a short-ish paragraph or two explanation.

Marching band is a ton of fun. Time consuming, yes, but I've never regretted it :) Judging sounds quite enjoyable. Given my time situation, I'll just be an entrant for this go round, but next time you can count me in to give judging a try!

I am very sorry, but I see myself forced to withdraw my participation. Everytime I try to write something, the work does not please me. Inspiration is still an issue. Very unfortunate, because the competition is really promising.
Good luck to you all!

Could you find it somewhere within you to be a judge at all?

Judging seems to be fun and there is no need for inspiration. If you think I am able to judge, I say yes.

*a short, written description of the criteria linking the art you chose.

How short can the description be? Is "based on works by abstract expressionist artists" sufficient or is that too short?

Short paragraph would be nice. Judges need to be able to connect without as little or no questions your art choices to your music. Be as specific as necessary.

Thanks for the response. Sorry if I'm being thick but I'm still a bit confused about the distinction between the points:

"a short, written description of the criteria linking the art you chose" and "a written description of the relevance of each artistic work to each movement."

I would have thought that what you said was the latter rather than the former.

I wouldn't´t take it to the letter. What I'll do is to describe why the artist and his/her works capture my attention and how I was inspired in every piece of art to compose the music.
