April Fool's 2008

Featured Replies

The following things are not true:

  • YC is closing down
  • YC is merging with SoundClick
  • chopin is unemployed.

Happy April Fool's, everyone! :w00t:

Those of you who have been around for a year or two will know that we like to mark the occasion with a little something. Last year, I photoshopped graffiti into the forum button images and made visible announcements claiming that a graffiti artist was on the loose. The year before that, users were randomly shown a message purporting to be from the CIA explaining that a communication they had made to the server was illegal and warranted a visit from law enforcement.

Maybe this year's prank played with people's emotions a little too much, so we're sorry if any of you guys got too worried.

As for next year's...I already thought of an idea last December, but simply didn't have enough time to implement it in code. That will probably be on the cards for '09. :whistling:

Dang! Nice job! You ALMOST shattered my hopes and dreams (not like it makes sense... but)

almost... haha.

Geez, I have to admit you guys had me... Next year maybe joke about something which is a bit more obviously a joke. I think this one is a bit sadistic and caused unecessary worry. Hmmmm, maybe you were just trying to get a feel for how much lurve there is for YC. Believe me, I would be very pissed of if the site suddenly closes or merges with Soundclick.

Ingenious, although there were some weak points that made it slightly easier to figure out. Anyway, well played :)

I noticed that the rest of the Staff played pretty well with the fool as well *looks at a few people* ;)

Sorry about playing with everyone's emotions, but it was fun!

A few facts:

  • Even if I lost my job, I would most likely get severance for a few weeks, and unemployment for a few months until I found another job.
  • Even if I lost my job, I could afford to run YC still, as the costs are negligible. Of course this could change in the next few months.
  • The advertising on my other website takes care of the costs to run YC.
  • The social network and music management are underway, and our developer Adam has been great so far!
  • Merging with Sound Click is ridiculous!
  • Both Mike and I love this site too much, and have invested a lot of time and money into this site to just "give it all up".

Happy April Fools!

Very well played - when you kept it up so long, even I started to wonder ;)

Well done

A psychological thriller! :D

I was really thinking that this place was closing down.

 Luckily its not !!

What a shock :O!

:P.....just the fact that all the mods/reviewers seemed to go along with it (i.e., didn't question it its validity) made it pretty obvious it was all a joke....and, of course, there was the whole 4/1 thing.

I think April Fool's jokes would work so much better before or after April Fool's Day ...a lot less people to suspect what's really going on :shifty:

Anyway, great prank, I bet you guys have wanted to do that one for a while now....good job!

You totally shouldn't have emphasized "work". Would've been interesting to see how many people were sharp enough to notice the discrepancy between losing your job and having work the next day. =P (I sure wasn't just there.)

Anyway, I'm surprised that so many people were fooled even after the date was mentioned. All considered, it was really obvious, IMO. =\ Anyway, nicely played, slightly cruel as it may have come to be. x3

  • Worst comes to worst, i'll sell it to DOFTS

Happy April Fools!
