  1. This is a piece of music I wrote based on an excerpt of William Wordsworths "The prelude-boat stealing" https://www.poetrybyheart.org.uk/poems/the-prelude/ Using themes and melodic and harmonic suggestions of nature and pride that at least, make sense to me. Please let me know what you think.
  2. Program Note: Each movement of this piece is inspired by and musically depicts the plot of a poem with the same name by Robert Frost. These poems tend to reflect on the sentiment of individuals as they observe and react to events taking place in nature. Spring Pools These pools that, though in forests, still reflect The total sky almost without defect, And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver, Will like the flowers beside them soon be gone, And yet not out by any brook or river, But up by the roots to bring dark foliage on. The trees that have it in their pent-up buds To darken nature and be summer woods - Let them think twice before they use their powers To blot out and drink up and sweep away These flowery waters and these watery flowers From snow that melted only yesterday. Fireflies in the Garden Here come real stars to fill up the upper skies, And here on earth come emulating flies That, though they never equal stars in size (And they were never really stars at heart), Achieve at times a very starlike start. Only, of course, they can't sustain the part. Gathering Leaves Spades take up leaves No better than spoons, And bags full of leaves Are light as balloons. I make a great noise Of rustling all day Like rabbit and deer Running away. But the mountains I raise Elude my embrace, Flowing over my arms And into my face. I may load and unload Again and again Till I fill the whole shed, And what have I then? Next to nothing for weight; And since they grew duller From the contact with earth, Next to nothing for color. Next to nothing for use. But a crop is a crop, And who's to say where The harvest shall stop? Dust of Snow The way a crow Shook down on me The dust of snow From a hemlock tree Has given my heart A change of mood And saved some part Of a day I had rued.
  3. Hi, im a college student mayoring in music composition. This year Ive been attending a class about composition over poetry. The thing is this class was not very good. Most of my college mates agree that most of the time in class was wasted, and that the professor we had wasn`t very good and had no idea how to keep us engage (unlike most of our college professors). Anyways, this professor insist in the importance of keeping the stressed syllable in a strong time (first or third beat) everytime. I consider this is a very generic way of working over a text. Sometimes in music you can place a "stressed" note or chord in a weak beat, and then release the tension of that note or chord on a "strong" beat, than in this case will sound softer in comparision. 90% of Mozart`s cadences work this way. If this can be done with "instrumental" music, why can`t it be done with a piece that includes text? I have to comply to my professor demands in this regard and place every stressed syllables in strong beats in the works im presenting to him, but I doubt this rule has to be abided every single time. Id like to know the opinions of other composers who composed vocal pieces. Is my professor %100 right or is there room for this rule to be broken?
  4. I came across this poem "I Cannot Forget" about the experience of Jewish people in WWII, and thought it was intriguing so I set it to music. Just a short project.
  5. Many who know me personally would say I have several personalities and in this topic I will show a different side of me that I haven't really shown the boards. Warning: Explicit language. Hip-hop was my first love and still is to this day. Sometimes I'll create my own beats and other times I won't. I will seperate a few songs I've done by the year and hopefully you guys would enjoy them. Fun fact: My parents nearly disowned me for making hip-hop music. I was raised in a middle class family and didn't necessarily live the type of lifestyle I rap about. My family literally hates rap music so I done mostly all of these in secret lol. Also a lot of these are in a hyperthetical sense; they're just words I thought sounded cool at the time. (Note: There are time skips in between but here is the link to one of my mixtapes I've done between 2012 and 2014. Some classified it as my best work.) http://mixconnect.com/listen/Rasheem+the+Guru+-+Poetic+Backstory-mid11891 Year 2009: I Refuse Solid Story of a Dope Fiend Year 2012: Yung & Blaq Exchange Year 2014: Waisting Time (My own beat) Falling Down (My own beat) Tried to Tell Me (My own beat) Year 2016: Pushin' On Remember Just Wanna Be Heard

  7. Are there any contemporary/recent poets whose work you [would] like to set to music? Or newer branches of poetry that you like? I don't know much about what's out there in this regard but am curious of any discoveries people have made that may be particularly useful for musical purposes.
