Requiem in d minor

I know there are already so many Requiems in D minor, but I prompted to write another one. Something about the key of D minor makes me feel like it is very suitable for Requiems.

So yeah, I have started only one movement of the Requiem, which is the first part: Requiem aeternam and I combined the Kyrie too.

Requiem aeternam is written in D minor and uses a small romantic orchestra, organ and SATB choir. The texture is mostly homophonic. There is this motive that I will use throughout the requiem, tonic - major 2nd - minor third. The harmony and everything is very conservative (in fact too conservative).

The plans for following movements:
- Requiem
- Lacrymosa
- Pie Jesu
- Offertory
- Sanctus
- Benedictus
- Agnus Dei
- Libera Me
- In Paradisum

So, the question is, should I continue with this piece or should I just abandon it?

This is an amazing piece. Do not for a second think of abandoning it. Of course it doesn't show on the midi file but it is evident that this piece would sound amazing if done live. My favourite part has to be at bar 68 where the alto and soprano come in creating some intricate dissonances and consonances when the tenor and bass join in.

I completely agree with Mogget1. Excellent work. Good choice going with a romantic orchestra. Your voice leading is excellent and the MIDI certainty doesn't do this piece justice. Please continue, you are doing excellent!

I must say, I was truly astounded by this piece. Works of any substantial quality are often the exception rather than the rule on this forum, yet your piece exemplifies the small pocket of truly prodigious talent that exists in this "online community."

With reference to your work, I can honestly say that it sounds to be of professional quality. Your sense of harmony, tension/release, chord progressions and voice leading is extraordinarily competent. Of particular note is this piece's seeming timelessness. It exhibits a very modern sense of drama and theatrics while simultaneously maintaining a pious, regal quality of the high Baroque or perhaps even Medieval period. In short, it evokes notions of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and even Mahler. Despite your personal fear of a "conservative harmony," I do not see the need for any drastic harmonic changes, unless you are aspiring to something exceptionally avant-garde.

Please continue working on this piece and pursue it to completion. I look forward to hearing the subsequent sections and, ideally, a live performance.

Very intriguing piece! I do see what you meant about it being harmony being conservative, however it all sounded very solid and pleasing to the ear to me. The only thing that didn't hit me quite right was the organ in some parts, but that's complete personal preference.

The organ part, perhaps I wasn't too careful about writing it. I will check it out later. =)

I don't know if this is because it was in a midi file... but sometimes the orchestra seemed to eat up the actual vocalists.

Regardless... I really liked it.
