JUNE 2020 Monthly Competition Ideas

Featured Replies

I don't know why more people don't want to do competitions, you're GUARANTEED peer review and a bigger platform to share your music.

I'm open to any ideas, I'm thinking solo piano or something similar and simple. Let me know if you're interested and in about a week we'll see who wants to participate and what theme we should use etc. etc.

If there are obvious skill differences then we could break it up into groups, but come on people let's get a good group together and see what we all come up with.

I'm interested.

I'm game. Perhaps if people state their specialism on this post and skill level, in order to develop a focus for each class.

I need to somehow kick myself back into composing regularly and past competitions have inspired me to write some of my better works so I'm definitely game.

Maybe a competition by years of experience in composition. And the theme might be "crisis" like the global one we are suffering or will suffer.

I think the instrumentation should be free.

I am in.

Nice! Glad you all are interested, let's all try and give some input on ideas and instrumentation, great input Ivan.

I wouldn't worry too much about skill and such, let's get as many people as we can to participate and once we have a better idea of who all wants to submit a piece we can divide it up into different groups.

I think the only official requirement so far would be to have a score for us to review. I'm excited!

Also, if you'd like to judge then let us all know.

Also, please please don't be afraid because of skill level, anybody can enter

Ok. I'm in too.

It's my first participation on the competition...which are the rules and when are we starting?

Yes, if a competition will be done then we need judges.

But should participants be allowed to judge the works of others? It was to be 100% impartial so not sure about what is the best option.

If we plan this well I'm in.

Historically here, participants aren't allowed to judge.

Then first we need some judges.

I'll judge.

I'd be willing to write for just about any instrumentation.

  • Solo, piano or otherwise? - Yes, definitely
  • Duet? - Yes
  • Trio? - Yes
  • Quartet? - Ehh, depends on what constitutes the quartet. Woodwinds, maybe, Strings only, most likely not(I find String Quartet to be harder to write for than Woodwind Quartet, despite similar principles applying to both)
  • Quintet, Sextet, etc.? - Same as applies to Quartet
  • Chamber orchestra? - Yes, this has become a common instrumentation of mine
  • Symphony orchestra? - Yes, as long as the piece isn't too long. Longest piece I've ever written for Symphony Orchestra is 10 minutes long

I doubt a lot of people will be willing to compose something for orchestra.

Love the continued interest!

I'll make an official post with participants, judges, rules, etc. at the end of the month.

I'll judge or participate, whatever we need more

I'll judge 😁😁😁

Or compose, if there are plenty of judges?

I've judged the last several competitions here, and would be interested in competing, but only if we know what we're getting ourselves into. I'll likely stay involved somehow, though!

I can judge or compete, either one, but I'd like to be involved in some way 🙂

We should do a poll.

I think it would be beneficial if the competition guidelines/rules somehow stretch each contestant without squelching his/her own artistic voice. A scenario would be nice I feel.

Maybe something along the lines of trying to convince a patron to support you financially? Your composition could be your 'interview' (I'm reminded here of Bach and the Brandenburg Concertos.) We could give you a bio sketch of the patron—keeping it as musically neutral as possible so that nobody is forced to compose in a particular style—and see how well you cater to the likes/dislikes of that person.

Just an idea. Feel free to shoot it down or modify it as you see fit.

I'm interested!
