  1. Hello everybody, I have won a composition competition with my saxophone sketch, which I already posted on the forum, and I can now finish my piece. I really need your help / suggestions / feedback! I will share my worries about the music in points, so that you can answer and discuss these. Extra information: The piece must be around 5 minutes long. The other post with the sketch can be foudn here: http://www.youngcomposers.com/t34939/sketch-saxophone-quartet/ The music ''ends'' at m.88. From m.88 there are sketches: Mm.90 - 97: Possible climax? Do you think this could be a nice climax for the piece or not? What should be a good way to create a climax in such an already heavy piece? Mm.138 - 143: Very tonal fragment based on the main theme to bring some lightness, but also humour. Do you think this would be nice to have in the music or does it ruin the whole mood and atmosphere of the piece? Although I like how I develop the themes that I give in the ''exposition,'' I don't like the music. It sounds boring and too repetitive to me and I have doubts wether I have over-developed the themes or not. There is no clear climax either. The most important element of this piece is the sudden dynamic shifts. I have thought about adding a second movement, so that the music isn't boring anymore, but this can also break the flow of the music in the first movement. The sketch was very interesting and very finished, but I feel like the music that I composed after finishing the sketch is of lower quality than the quality of the sketch.   2. Hi everybody, I am writing a piece for a composition competition in Holland. The piece is to be written for a Dutch professional saxophone quartet. They firstly want to have a sketch of the piece that takes no longer than one minute. I called the piece Medea. Medea is a Greek witch in the story called Medea by Euripides. In class we were studying the Latin translation of the tragedy and in my opinion it is very impressive. In the part we have read Medea was furious with everybody she knows. In the Messiaen masterclass I learned a new composing method, which I wanted to apply. I used the third mode and tried to create harmony with a lot of dissonances, but also with rest points.   4. Hi all, I have (finally) completed my Quartet for Piano and Winds. I have completed the first and second movement in August, but I was not able to compose a third movement, until last week. When I listened to Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds, K.452. I decided to compose a Quartet, which could be played by my friends and me. This is the reason why it is written for Bb Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, F Horn and Piano. I have tried to compose the third movement in the same style as the other two movements.   6. Hi everyone! Here's my piece for flute, violin, cello, and piano, called "Mystic Lands". It's a rondo, but when the A section returns, the instrumentation, harmony, and accompaniment are changed. I also wrote it for a class, so I had to use different harmonic techniques for each section: -For the opening section, I used static harmony/pedal tones. -Letter A uses polychords with major and minor triads. -Letter B uses added note chords. -Letter C uses polychords consisting of seventh chords, quartal structures, quintal structures, and clusters. -Letter D uses compound chords (meaning various intervals are combined to create a non-tertian voicing).   7. The 29th sketch was supposed to be an exercise in an older style for either quartet or chamber orchestra. Near the end you can tell I got bored of that, and ended with a very obviously not-older-style ending. Not entirely convinced by it myself, to be honest. Enjoy!
  8. This is an edit I did to a piece I wrote for school. I wanted something a little more professional sounding and not so humorous. I added a prelude to the fugue to give it some length and more opportunity to show my writing. I plan to use this as part of my portfolio for college, so any suggestions are welcome. Doesn't have to be about the piece, could be about what else to include in the portfolio. Sheet music is also available to see any engraving issues. There's probably a lot.
  9. First and foremost; I do not know anything about string playing. As a result of such inadequacy, there are maybe some double stops (don't think triple stops) that are a bit hard to play. I've had a friend look at it, and I've had the string teacher at my school look at it. My friend the string teacher is convinced that it is almost definitively a college piece. I just wanted to write a fugue. P.s. The ending might be a little. inappropriate. it was meant to be funny but now that i look at it after the fact, I think I might implore a different last few bars.
  10. Following in the spirit of Jaap and Daniel, I post a recent work of mine in honor of this place coming back. Here I have a string quartet read by the jack quartet and that was a winner (my first award ever!) of the Ruth and Emil Beyer Award for Composition in the chamber division. I Watching a sunset is an interesting experience. Because the sun seems less bright, you can essentially stare straight at it without worry of injury. There is a moment of brief excitement when, just before being enveloped in darkness, the sky chances colors from blue to orange, and finally, a mixture of purple and pink. Already the Sunlight Fades is in one movement and uses triptych form to emulate the sun setting, the colors in the sky changing, and the onset of darkness that follow.
  11. Milieu is a percussion quartet based in Baltimore, MD. Milieu is inviting composers of all ages to submit percussion quartets to be premiered in the first quarter of 2016. Milieu's mission as a percussion quartet is to play music that reflects the values, ideas, and aesthetics of life in 2015; this is the source of our excitement to collaborate with new composers. Broadening the audience of contemporary classical music is a often assumed but undervalued prospect of commissioning new works. When it comes to new repertoire, Milieu is looking for music that starts conversations. The first steps toward engaging a wider audience is closely collaborating with the composer. 3 quartets will be chosen from a pool of applicants and featured at the premiere concert. In addition, 1 quartet will receive a professional film and audio recording of their work. Click here to submit your work.   12. What are some good pieces to study brass chamber music writing? I have an assignment to write a brass duo/trio (I chose a trio) due Friday and I haven't been able to find anything decent.
