  1. This is my first ever chamber work. I am trying to gain experience in writing for strings hence I decided to compose a string quartet. Constructive feedback is always welcome! Edit: I posted another audio with different soundfont and after correcting some issues.
  2. 1. Prèlude et Sonata.pdf 1. Prèlude et Sonata.mp3 Hi, so i'm making this small sonata but i'm struggling a lot and don't know how to continue, any suggestions? thank you
  3. As the title implies, this is my first composition for strings. Coincidentally it's also my first thing in a sonata like form. Tell me what you think! I don't shy away from constructive criticism. As a note: I do enjoy dissonance, both as a composer and a performer, but I know that some people do not enjoy that in the same way.
  4. Christmas adagio movement for string quartet and organ ad libitum. It was originally meant as a middle movement of a Christmas fantasia, but I never wrote the other movements and I don't think I'll ever do it, so now I post this piece as a stand-alone piece. In this work I employed melodies and motifs from two polish christmas carols - Jezus malusieńki (violin 1 & 2) and Mizerna cicha (viola). Hopefully the piece will be performed this Christmas
  5. Hi all, here is my first attempt at a saxophone quartet lunch at Meat Buddies' EmotiveScores
  6. I have written a quartet for strings on which I would like the honour of some of your criticisms. This work has sprouted from almost a year and a half of counterpoint study. It is similar to a fugue; that is, it does tend to have fugal aspects; however on the whole, this is mostly a work of counterpoint with many interesting hidden ideas embedded within it. I can understand if you are unable to listen to the entire work, as it is almost 16 minutes long; however, if you give me some feedback on even a single contrapuntal passage, I would be greatly indebted to you. Thank you for your time and I dearly hope you enjoy this work. On a side note, this recording that I have here does not take into consideration single note dynamics which is indeed frustrating; however, it is the only soundfont I could find that effectively does some of the counterpoint justice (that is, so it is not too muddy sounding).
  7. It may be November, but church musicians have been thinking about Christmas music for months! Ho-ho-ho!
  8. Hey gang, I posted this piece earlier when I was in the middle of writing it. Here is the finished product. This is the piece I composed over the spring semester during my first semester of composition lessons at the university I am attending. Please enjoy and let me know what you think! (P.S. Evidently when you use Petrucci font in Finale, the tremolo stops working, so that's why it appears in the score, but is not in the MP3 [do the midi problems ever end...?])
  9. Hi all 🙂 I'm glad to present you my new étude for string quartet. Hope you'll like it 🙂
  10. Hi all 🙂 Here's my last work : Hope some of you will like it 🙂 Have a nice day
  11. Hi all 🙂 Here's a short (2'30) attempt at a string quartet. Any feedback appreciated 😉
  12. Unfortunately, the first movement is unfinished 😉 1 Adagio- Allegro comodo (unfinished).mid 2 Andante calmo.mid 3 Menuetto.mid 4 Andantino (Double Variations).mid
  13. Hello everybody! I am very busy with my final exams and auditions, so that is the reason why I have not been online for a while. Anyway, I composed a new 'neoclassical' composition for string quartet. Each movement is based on the letters of one of my friends' name. I used the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G and Ut, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti. The duration of each movement is pretty short, because I wanted to have the movements in balance. Some themes are namely pretty hard for me to compose more than two minutes. Enjoy and please comment! Sharing your opinion means a lot too! Maarten
  14. Inspired by the second movement of. Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps, as well as my first time writing anything remotely in a modern style. Ternary form with a break in the B section returning to temporary traditional harmonies. An experiment in dissonance, bitonality, chromaticism, and quintal harmonies. And yes the English is bad for a reason. Comments and critique welcome!
  15. A short Horn Quartet inspired by hunting music with a mixture of Waltz light music. Any criticism and opinions are welcomed
  16. hello everyone, this is my new piece of music, a traditional Chinese folk one, hope you like it, and welcome everyone's commentation.
  17. Hello! Sometimes I just need to write and write and write... without thinking about whether people will like it or not. I decided to compose a piece based on motifs. This time, I decided to compose another neoclassical composition: String Quartet No.2 ''Cuckoo'' in G, Op. 65. The music is meant as a sort of scherzo. The main motif is the sound of a cuckoo. This string quartet consists of only one movement, which is in sonata form. Feel free to comment! Maarten
  18. Hi everyone, I am inspired by the cold weather today, so I jot down some notes here. How would you comment this short excerpt? Thank you. HoYin
  19. A short piece for String Quartet, please somebody who plays string instruments tell me if this is playable and where I can improve as its fairly repetitive and I feel like it's not going anywhere.
  20. Here's my first serious string quartet, recorded with electronic instruments so the dynamics are displayed very poorly. Separated in 5 small movements, with a backstory in the video description for whoever is interested.
  21. Hello! You may perhaps have seen the collaboration topic for Theme and Variations on a Dutch folk song ''Sinterklaas is jarig''. Since I don't get any variations, I have decided that the piece is finished now. I want to thank all participants for their submissions, which are all great! It was fun to have so many people submit a variation, so maybe we can do more collaboration projects on the basis of simple songs. Theme: ''Sinterklaas is jarig.'' For more info, see below. I made a mistake by confusing the song ''Sinterklaas is jarig'' with ''Oh! Kom maar eens kijken.'' The latter is incorrect. Variation I. @MusicianXX12 Varation II. @Luis Hernández Variation III. @ilv Variation IV. @MusicianXX12 Variation V. @Maarten Bauer Variation VI. @Maarten Bauer Variation VII. @DirkH Variation VIII. @Aure_liano BACKGROUND INFORMATION The theme is a Dutch / Flemish Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) song. ''The feast of Sinterklaas celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas on 6 December. The feast is celebrated annually with the giving of gifts on St. Nicholas' Eve (5 December) in the northern parts of the Netherlands and on the morning of 6 December, Saint Nicholas Day, in the southern provinces of the Netherlands, as well as Belgium, Luxembourg and northern France (French Flanders, Lorraine and Artois). The tradition is also celebrated in territories of the former Dutch Empire, including Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and Suriname.'' (Wikipedia, n.d.). To practise your Dutch, here is a special episode from 2016 when Sinterklaas arrives in Maassluis. The text in this theme (there are many variations) is the following including the translation: Sinterklaas is jarig! 'k Zet mijn schoen vast klaar. Wellicht dat hij hem vol doet met, ja wist ik het maar. Hier zet ik wat water en wat hooi voor 't paard, want dat trouwe beestje is het heus wel waard. It's Sinterklaas' birthday. I'm putting my shoe down already. I hope that he will fit it with, if I only knew... Here I put some water there some hay for the horse, because that faithful animal is really worth it. Sinterklaas is jarig 5.0.mp3 Sinterklaas is jarig 5.0.pdf Best wishes, Maarten
  22. Hello everybody, You may have already seen the two other topics about this quartet. One is about the sketch, which I had to make for the selection rounds of the composition competition. The other one was about how to create a climax and how to continue and finish the piece. Finally, I have finished the piece and to be honest I hate it. I have heard it so many times and it was terribly hard to finish the piece and include a climax. @Luis Hernández I hope that there are more vertical lines and there is a clear climax. The piece is about Europides' Medea. More information in the PDF attached to this post. The notes on page still have to be changed. There are a few themes and motives exposed in the beginning and during the piece I develop them in many ways. I have, for example, included a Fugato structure, where the theme is a based on a motive in the beginning. I am very sorry that the instruments sound so fake. . . If anybody knows a decent soundfont for saxophone (quartet), please let me know! Thanks for listening! Feedback and comments would be very nice! Maarten
  23. Hello everybody, This was my first saxophone quartet that I composed one and a half year ago. . . (Opus 8). When I composed it, I was into composing for max. four months. I There are mistakes everywhere and when I wrote this I did not understand how to modulate (LOL), so there are quite subite transitions to other keys. I thought it would be fun for you to see how I am developed in one and a half year. The Mozart and Haydn influences are evident. I find this piece now uggly, but still I think at some places the music is pretty nice. The uggliest parts in my opinion are the endless repetitions, which makes the music too monotonous and boring. What do you think? Maarten
