Hello everybody! I just finished my Piano Concerto No.1 ''Octaves'' in f minor. The Concerto consists of only one movement: Allegro con brio. The music is, of course, written for piano and string orchestra. The goal for me to write this piano concerto was to learn more about how to write for piano and how to write in a more classical, early romantic style. Note that I added some more contemporary elements as well. The concerto is in free Sonata Form: Exposition - Exposition repetition with piano (classical) || Development (many more modern elements) || Recapitulation without the second theme. I ommited the second theme in the recapitulation, because I felt like this theme was already 'mentioned' too frequently. Furtheremore, ending with the first theme sounds fine to me. Hey, I have been tasked with arranging, "Gentle Shepherd" for an instrumental duet for a wedding. Right now it sounds very solemn - like something you'd play at a funeral, but I want to add some brightness to it, but not sure how. I think the timbre of the flute may be the culprit here, as it sounded much brighter with two violins. Overall, I like the sound of the piece - I think I stayed true to the original feel of the song, and I put my own spin on the harmony through various suspensions (mainly 4-3 and 7-6) and moving lines. I did try and keep the rhythm pretty consistent in the moving lines - sticking to the dotted qtr-8th-half pattern. I'm open to any feedback you all may have - thank you.

Anyway, I composed a new 'neoclassical' composition for string quartet. Each movement is based on the letters of one of my friends' name. I used the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G and Ut, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti. The duration of each movement is pretty short, because I wanted to have the movements in balance. This time, I decided to compose another neoclassical composition: String Quartet No.2 ''Cuckoo'' in G, Op. 65. The music is meant as a sort of scherzo. The main motif is the sound of a cuckoo. This string quartet consists of only one movement, which is in sonata form. Feel free to comment! The text in this theme (there are many variations) is the following including the translation: Sinterklaas is jarig! 'k Zet mijn schoen vast klaar. Wellicht dat hij hem vol doet met, ja wist ik het maar. Hier zet ik wat water en wat hooi voor 't paard, want dat trouwe beestje is het heus wel waard. It's Sinterklaas' birthday. I'm putting my shoe down already. I hope that he will fit it with, if I only knew... Here I put some water there some hay for the horse, because that faithful animal is really worth it. Hello everybody, It sounds very interesting to me when we have a collaboration project in the form of Theme and Variations. For the ones who don't know what this form is: you compose one or more variations on a stated theme. A clear example is Mozart's Dodici variazioni su 'Ah, vous dirai-je Maman': How does it work? You can compose as many variations on the given theme as you want. There are a few rules / points: Only write for the string quartet (1st violin, 2nd violin, viola, violoncello). Not all variations have to contain all instruments, so you can also compose a variation for string trio (violin, viola, violoncello) or a solo passage. Make sure that the theme is recognizable or at least fragments of it. Every style is accepted: contemporary, classical, Pop, Jazz, minimal etc. Variations may not be longer than 2 minutes. When you have finished a variation, please post it in this topic with the following files. This namely saves a lot time for me to edit the final version. Do string players want me to notate spicatto and other techniques? How are they written?Hi Everyone, I have started writing this piano work including a Piano solo and the string orchestra. I think I have introduced some themes into it, but are the themes insufficiently developed? Most of the time I tend to end a theme too quickly (maybe?) and start another, causing poor connection between them. (For example, mm. 29-30, 69-71, 89-90, 95-96 are such transitions) I don't have much knowledge about "bridging" motives, so I sincerely ask for some suggestions for it. Is the harmony good too?
