  5. So... I want to compose more for orchestra and begin to build a decent corpus. Only thing... is that I'm more knowledgeable on string techniques and writing -with a growing understanding of woodwinds. Brass are my main issues... I just don't know the best ways to compose for them! I get that they can play soft... I understand that trombones and horns can provide nice padding to any texture -but, I'm scared to death to use them because I don't want to overpower the winds and strings. I can hear the brass instruments in my head (which is a good thing for orchestration) -but I still am hesitant to use them. Any tips or suggestions?

    Etude

    The idea behind the first part of this movement is the growth of material from one note to its full statement. The clarinet, trumpet, violin, vibraphone, and trombone all play there own material treated in this manner. Each statement introduces a new note to their material. The bassoon and bass provide a sonic backdrop to this unravelling. I plan on expanding on this idea in other works -this was a fun idea to work on. Hope you enjoy.
  7. Hey all, I am working on a collection of small pieces, preferably 5, based on short stories (hence the name). I made a rough draft of the first one and was wondering if it was an idea worth continuing. Any comments would be helpful!   8. This is my first composition I wanted to put on here, and my first one I will count (All the others were either practice, arrangements, or incomplete and I wasn't comfortable counting them). So I guess this my Op. 1! It is for Flute, Clarinet in Bb, and Trumpet in Bb. It is very short, but I feel it's pretty okay for me atleast. I tried to make the trumpet stand out so I put the trumpet melody in Bb first, then Eb, then in G twice. For the final trumpet melody, I made the Clarinet and Flute switch from F to G major for a nice ending.
  9. This is my 3rd soliloquy for trumpet. I have also written a set of "Three Sententiae for Trumpet and Piano, Op. 296", which, like the two previous soliloquies for trumpet, were composed in April 2017. I have provided the transposing score for the trumpet in Bb, as in all the previous trumpet pieces I have posted here. First post here, this is an orchestra work I did a while back as an ode to Virginia (My home state) it takes you through various regions of the state such as the Tidewater, the Appalachians, the Blue Ridge, and the Shenandoah valley. I was inspired to write this when hearing the intro for Appalachian Spring by Copland. I remember our teacher saying it was meant to capture a morning in the Appalachian Mountains (where my family is from), and thinking to myself that Copland nailed it, but I wanted a piece that would do the same for the whole of Virignia (Or at least parts of it). I sought to emulate this in the beginning of the piece. The piece concludes with my take on Oh, Shenandoah. A river that rolls through Virginia which I spent many summers on. Let me know what you think, and yes I know the score is horribly engraved.

I had somehow avoided composing for the trumpet for many years, perhaps because my first composition for it, back in 1997, although perhaps unrealistically difficult for actual performance, I regarded as maybe my best composition, and perhaps with a supernaturalistic fear, I avoided to compose for trumpet for fear that I might not succeed to reproduce the same quality! However, after I composed my previous sententiae for trumpet and piano (posted here two days ago), it seems my inspiration to compose for trumpet was stimulated, and so I composed my first soliloquy for trumpet which I post now, as well as a second soliloquy for trumpet (hopefully to be posted soon). I think/hope that nearly two decades later, I have succeeded to recapture something of the same high quality but with much less difficulty and more playability in this long-awaited sequel to my first trumpet piece!

Coming on the heels of my first soliloquy for trumpet, my "Soliloquy for Trumpet No. 2", the idea for which preceded its composition, is an attempt to depict the last trumpet the Bible tells us will sound at the second coming of Christ as described in verses such as the following: "... for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall all be changed." 1 Corinthians 15:52 (see also 1 Thessalonians 4:16). I don't know how far this piece has succeeded to approximate that trumpet's true sound, music, and of course, its powerful impact. Only God knows - and our imaginations can imagine and judge!
  22. These are my "Three Sententiae for Trumpet and Piano, Op. 296". They are my first pieces ever written for the duo of trumpet and piano. I sent them to a professional trumpeter who had made a call for pieces for trumpet and piano, but I never heard from them! Obviously they didn't like it and in all rudeness couldn't even acknowledge receipt of the pieces! It's their loss and your gain! I post it here for your enjoyment and feedback which I will appreciate.

  24. Instead of arranging a piece for a full band, I tried doing a slightly different style. Inspired by Adrian Quince, I had high woodwinds (oboe), low woodwinds (bassoon), saxophone, high brass (trumpet) and low brass (tuba).
