After writing several small pop/easy listening style pieces, I have decided to go for it and write a larger work: an opera. I have the story down and I even named some of the characters after composers I really admire. I decided to outline the story and journal about my characters before doing anything else. Now I am going to move along and start writing the libretto. The biggest obstacle for me is writing for orchestra. I am a pianist and I can write for piano, voice and a solo instrument like one violin or one flute. But a full orchestra? I have zero experience in that. Maybe if I write a piano part and then transcribe it to various orchestra parts that will make my life easier. I also want to know the little nuances like the difference between writing for C Trumpet vs. B Flat Trumpet? Any recommendations on how to learn about this? My community college does not offer an orchestra writing class.

New here :) Here's a piece I did on MuseScore, a march for piano. Curious to know what you guys think, how it might be improved. I am just starting to learn how to sight-read, after years of just messing around on the piano and improvising without reading.

This is the first time in a while that I've written something in swing rhythm specifically, but it seemed to call for it. It turned out to be a combo of contemporary/classical/jazz — I don't think there's a good label for it. I did use sacred geometry in this piece, which I'm doing all the time now, and seems to be working our pretty well. I'm open to any feedback or thoughts you have.

Hey guys, this is my first time on the forum. Just wanted to post some of my music and see where it takes me. This is my first solo piano EP that I've written, it is called distance makes the heart grow fonder and it depicts the feelings experienced by a couple who love each other, yet are separated for a while, starting with a piece depicting the farewell on the train station, then moving to a portrayal of the man experiencing loneliness but thinking fondly of his love "while watching the stars". The third piece is the central piece of the EP and is a melancholy love theme. The final piece is supposed to be a breathtaking depiction of when the eyes of the couple finally meet for the first time again and the bliss and relief of seeing each other again. I've posted these before but I though I'd share it again as I made some minor edits since it was last posted on some of them. This is a set of six pieces dedicated to my daughter that I wrote around the time she was born four years ago. The keys of the pieces (loosely) spell out her name. They have a pretty large range in terms of difficulty since I initially set out to write short simple pieces suitable for an intermediate level piano student but over time, they evolved to become more thematic in nature loosely depicting a childhood scene. Here's brief description of each one: No. 1 in C major - A simple sonatina movement, perhaps depicting a child's first steps on their own. No. 2 in A major - A waltz-like piece, perhaps hinting at a young child dancing with her doll (my daughter loves to dance). No. 3 in B-flat major - A fast scherzo somewhat capturing the happy chaos of young children playing together. No. 4 in B minor - A hybrid rondo-variation form. The A theme is supposed to depict the child in various moods over the course of the day as he spends the day with his mother, starting off a little grumpy when he wakes up and ending quietly as he is put to bed. No. 5 in E minor - A set of simple variations on "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" which used to be my daughter's favorite song as a toddler. Not surprisingly this is her favorite one. No. 6 in G major - A march celebrating the transition from childhood to young adulthood.

Usually, I don't like working on fuges. Although I love counterpoint, and use it all the time, so many rules are not what I like most. So, I wrote this piece using different classic modes, which provide more freedom. FUGA MODAL Partitura completa.pdf FUGA MODAL.mp3

Dear All, Please check out my new piano composition. I listened to it too many times and I think I became insensitive to the parts that sound out of harmony (if exists). It would be quite useful for me if you point the parts that sound good or bad.

Audio: Allegro.mp3 Score: Allegro TOTALLY DONE.pdf The date was September 24, 2006, my 22nd birthday. Erica and I decided to have a picnic in Meadow Park, share a bottle of wine, and take a nap. It was during this wine-induced nap that somebody walked into our house, in the middle of the day no less, while we slept peacefully in the bedroom, and stole my laptop. This particular laptop happened to contain all the music I had ever written up to that time. Was it backed up somewhere? Of course not. After all, my laptop had never been stolen before, so why would I need to back up everything I'd ever created. Nope, it was all right there, and someone stole it right out of my house in broad daylight. I never saw it again. The thief did not take our DVD player. He did not take our television. He did not take my car keys or the stereo either. He didn't even take the laptop's power cord. Just the laptop. And of course my very reason for living. When I awoke from my cat nap, it took me a good half hour to realize the laptop was gone. I won't try to put into words what went through my head except to say this: all of my art was destroyed that day. I had no website, no hard drive, no printed copies. I felt like a victim of fire. I was completely alone with my grief. Ok I was able to salvage a couple things. While ravaging through my belongings looking for any sheet music I could find, I miraculously discovered some printed pages stuffed down into a drawer. The pages were the original versions of what would later become the third and fourth movements of my first piano sonata. I was also able to copy down from memory the scraps that would later become the last movement of my first string quartet. Other than those tidbits, everything else was taken forever. My entire career as a composer up to that point was a blank page. I'm not sure how long I waited until I tried to sit down and write something again. Maybe a month. Whenever it was, when I sat down in front of that blank page, I actually felt very free, despite my sadness (and rage). It was as if all my musical baggage had been tossed unceremoniously in the trash can. Whatever genre I had been trying to fit into, whatever musical puzzle I had been wrestling with, whatever inadequacies I felt about my completed work - they were all completely moot now. I was born anew. So I sat down and wrote a violin sonata. I had never written for the violin before, but my approach was to write as if the instrument could do anything I wanted it to do. I wrote that way for the piano too. No more feeling constrained by my own lack of pianistic ability. I put on that page whatever I damn well felt like. It felt good. And somehow, despite all the pain, the music was chipper. Even at my darkest moments, my music comes out chipper. Maybe it's just who I am, or maybe that's how I cope. My brain might feel all doom and gloom, but my music is sunshine and rainbows. This first movement is the first piece I wrote after my babies were taken from me. I completed the movement in March of 2007. It is very much a classical piece, straight up sonata form, repeat bar and everything. It might not be genre shattering, but it was a very open and freeing experience for me to write it. It's what I was feeling at the time. It's what had to come out.
