  1. My master's degree is starting to draw to a close, and I'm very aware that every piece I write now will be one of the last while I still have my tutor. For that reason, I've really tried to push myself beyond my current boundaries wherever possible. This piece, while not incredibly 'contemporary' sounding I suppose, in some ways represents the culmination of my efforts and explorations while at this institution. I've pushed my harmonies and chord progressions as far as I'm personally willing to right now, and also used some new string techniques that I'd not really explored before. Some of this piece, especially the second half, is definitely among my favourite music I've ever written. I've still kept to my usual style of working with very short bits of material and seeing where I can take them, but this piece is roughly divided into three or four smaller sections which have their own separate ideas as well. I've also become very interested lately in sounds that 'morph' over the course of a single note. Usually, that just means fading multiple instruments in and out on the same note. I feel that this is an area that isn't adequately explored in a lot of the more widely played contemporary repertoire, especially in more amateur-aimed music. This piece will be performed at the start of May by a professional ensemble (including a very skilled concert pianist, fortunately). It'll be conducted, which is why I put the piece in this section. I've put it on Soundcloud as well if that playback is working better than this site for whatever reason. There's a couple of really minor changes between the score and the recording, because once you start polishing the score in Sibelius you often kind of ruin the playback.
  2. Hello everyone; "Feeling Free" is my first composition. It's an original piece that depicts our desire for a carefree attitude in our daily life only to be faced with daily struggles that bring us down; however, free-spiritedness will prevail. I tried to capture this struggle in this Jazzy – Swing-esque Composition. I hope you will enjoy listening to it and looking forward to hear what you think of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oFtIc8Yfpc
  3. Hi sorry haven't posted for ages, been busy! Here's the 2nd Movement of my Piano Concerto. I composed it when I was younger, but decided to re-work it. Will be uploading 1st and 3rd movements onto youtube soon. Hope you enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVs3_spSBD8 Mike
  4. A little piece I wrote. Venganza_.pdf Venganza.mp3
  5. Here is my first large theme and variations work for piano. I don't think the score is perfect, but I will make these changes later.
  6. Here is piece for alto saxophone and piano that I wrote to play with my sister. Any feedback would be appreciated!

  10. Wanted to share an improv from the past year or two. Curious to know what you guys think. Technique, melody, etc. Thanks for listening!
  11. After writing several small pop/easy listening style pieces, I have decided to go for it and write a larger work: an opera. I have the story down and I even named some of the characters after composers I really admire. I decided to outline the story and journal about my characters before doing anything else. Now I am going to move along and start writing the libretto. The biggest obstacle for me is writing for orchestra. I am a pianist and I can write for piano, voice and a solo instrument like one violin or one flute. But a full orchestra? I have zero experience in that. Maybe if I write a piano part and then transcribe it to various orchestra parts that will make my life easier. I also want to know the little nuances like the difference between writing for C Trumpet vs. B Flat Trumpet? Any recommendations on how to learn about this? My community college does not offer an orchestra writing class.
  12. New here :) Here's a piece I did on MuseScore, a march for piano. Curious to know what you guys think, how it might be improved. I am just starting to learn how to sight-read, after years of just messing around on the piano and improvising without reading.
  13. This is the first time in a while that I've written something in swing rhythm specifically, but it seemed to call for it. It turned out to be a combo of contemporary/classical/jazz — I don't think there's a good label for it. I did use sacred geometry in this piece, which I'm doing all the time now, and seems to be working our pretty well. I'm open to any feedback or thoughts you have.
  14. Hello good people!! I would like to know what you think about my new piano piece, especially about the different theme changes and atmosphere. Did I get it right?? 🙂 🙂
  15. I've just created a new composition that I think is very good. Feel free to use it or share it if you want :) I also have sheet music if anyone wants just dm me https://youtu.be/YoQnMj3qp7o
  16. The classic tune 'Chelsea Bridge' on the piano with electronics.
  17. Hey guys, this is my first time on the forum. Just wanted to post some of my music and see where it takes me. This is my first solo piano EP that I've written, it is called distance makes the heart grow fonder and it depicts the feelings experienced by a couple who love each other, yet are separated for a while, starting with a piece depicting the farewell on the train station, then moving to a portrayal of the man experiencing loneliness but thinking fondly of his love "while watching the stars". The third piece is the central piece of the EP and is a melancholy love theme. The final piece is supposed to be a breathtaking depiction of when the eyes of the couple finally meet for the first time again and the bliss and relief of seeing each other again. Link to the EP on Spotify: Constructive criticism appreciated! Please let me know what you think. And if you like it, adding it to your library on Spotify would help me massively. Check out two of the pieces on YouTube as well: Thanks!
  18. This is a short piece from several years ago
  19. Hey all! It's been a while since I posted anything, but I thought I'd mark my return with this new piece! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlqDGZ5r0uw I hope you like it! Dan
  20. I've posted these before but I though I'd share it again as I made some minor edits since it was last posted on some of them. This is a set of six pieces dedicated to my daughter that I wrote around the time she was born four years ago. The keys of the pieces (loosely) spell out her name. They have a pretty large range in terms of difficulty since I initially set out to write short simple pieces suitable for an intermediate level piano student but over time, they evolved to become more thematic in nature loosely depicting a childhood scene. Here's brief description of each one: No. 1 in C major - A simple sonatina movement, perhaps depicting a child's first steps on their own. No. 2 in A major - A waltz-like piece, perhaps hinting at a young child dancing with her doll (my daughter loves to dance). No. 3 in B-flat major - A fast scherzo somewhat capturing the happy chaos of young children playing together. No. 4 in B minor - A hybrid rondo-variation form. The A theme is supposed to depict the child in various moods over the course of the day as he spends the day with his mother, starting off a little grumpy when he wakes up and ending quietly as he is put to bed. No. 5 in E minor - A set of simple variations on "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" which used to be my daughter's favorite song as a toddler. Not surprisingly this is her favorite one. No. 6 in G major - A march celebrating the transition from childhood to young adulthood.
  21. Usually, I don't like working on fuges. Although I love counterpoint, and use it all the time, so many rules are not what I like most. So, I wrote this piece using different classic modes, which provide more freedom. FUGA MODAL Partitura completa.pdf FUGA MODAL.mp3
  22. Dear All, Please check out my new piano composition. I listened to it too many times and I think I became insensitive to the parts that sound out of harmony (if exists). It would be quite useful for me if you point the parts that sound good or bad.
